I emailed oxbow to ask about their formula after reading that the organic range guinea pig and rabbit pellets had the exact same ingredients.
“You are correct in that our rabbit and guinea pig formulas are the same for these products, as both small herbivore species have very similar digestive physiology and nutrient requirements. These products are nutritionally complete and balanced for both species when fed according to the directions on the back of the package and were developed with input from leading exotic nutritionist and veterinarians to best meet nutritional requirements for these species. Please know that it’s not at all our intention to be deceptive in the marketing of these two products. Finding and consistently sourcing certified organic ingredients that meet our exacting standards requires some formula overlap. Beyond sourcing, many of our customers are pet parents to one species of animal, but not others. Although the formula is the same for these specific products, the different packaging provides purchasing clarity for the customer that is looking for a product to best meet the species of their furry family member. Additionally, our packaging serves as a canvas for species specific education to help pet parents provide the very best environment to help their pets live happy, healthy lives.”
The rabbit pellets do indeed have added vitamin C so it is good news for me. The guinea pig packaged ones are not sold here. I seemed to have found one shop though that has stock with the old packaging intended for guinea pigs. I doubt they will be getting new stock so it is a relief I can buy the rabbit one and know it is nutritionally complete for guinea pigs.
