the vet finally got the oxbox pellets and hay in today. they had to come from queensland as that is the only place in australia that has timothy hay at present. other states like victoria, sydney and tasmania get timothy hay in the spring which is september. anyways i bought one of each-1 packet of the cavy cusine and 1 packet of the timothy hay. and practically had a heart attack. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: it came to $52.00 or 26 pounds, the hay was $19.25 or 9.62.5 pounds and the pellets were $32.75 or 16.37.5 pounds. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
as this is the first time i have bought this products for my piggies is this normal for pricing? especially for those in aussie land how much do you pay? i know the oxbow products are good for the piggies, but my girls don't/won't eat pellets. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: what i am going to do is break the timothy hay into small bits and mix it in with the pellets and see if they will eat it this way. i will introduce these slowly especially for zoe and hopefully they will eat them. if not at least i know faline the bunny will. :-* :-* :-* hugs and cuddles to you all. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-* :-* :-*

Hi Mary,

Not sure on the pellets but I get the Hay for a 1KG bag it costs £9.00.

I am going to get a month's supply of Hay which is 4KG at £25.00 and a month's supply of Pellets at £15.99. :D

The pellets are 9.99 for a small (2.5kg bag) here. It is expensive for such a small bag. I'm trying mine with them at the moment and thy're not eating them either! ::) ;D So that was money down the drain! I'm going to persevere at least until the bag's finished and hopefully they'll grow to like it! ::) I'm trying it because it's supposed to be the best. If they don't eat it i'll try supa guinea (burgess exel?) because thats supposed to be the next best. O0

mine have supa guinea burgess excel and they love it, they prefer it to the p@h mix and wagg mix :) i didnt think i would find something which they prefered to the wagg lol

The oxbow timothy hay is very expensive - just over £8 for 1.1kg. I have tried to find out why it is so expensive and what makes it different from other timothy hay produced around the world but so far have not been able to get any answers. I would imagine much of the cost is air frieght/import charges ? I can imagine you would be shocked paying those prices, I just use it as a treat a few times a week for each piggie. I have no doubt it is a good product but for most people (especially operating a rescue) the price is very prohibitive. A luxury item is the best way to view it ;)

I've tried the pellets with every single guinea pig that comes in to the rescue and most give it the thumbs down so I only keep a small amount in stock. It isn't a favourite and no matter what we humans think my piggies just aren't keen :-\

It is expensive Louise but I love it. I've just bought the 4KG bag at £25.00 and that will last a month, it will save me mixing it with Meadow Hay I was spending £15.00 a week on Hay alone with 3 meadow and 1 timothy so the bigger bag is chaper all round...now where to put it! :D

my vet sells the oxbow timothy hay, i was thinking of getting some next time i go, as the only other place i can get timothy hay round here is pets at home and the boys dont like it, but i dont know how much they charge for it. i wont buy hay/bedding/food off the internet due to postage prices, it always works out expensive

Yep Lez you have to work it all out and see if you are making a saving. For what I ordered and 2 Hay racks £4.95 was the charge from Pampered Piggies it works out at £11.84 a week whereas I was spending £18.24 a week on pellets and hay. :)

I'm back to mixing the pellets with Excel because the place I get it from has hiked the price. It's now over £12 for 4kg and I have to travel 15 miles to get it so it's no longer really doable to feed 5 pigs entirely on Cavy Cuisine. Ordering it online would be about the same but the postage for a large amount (20kg) is just ridiculous.

my girls don't like the pellets and now i feel bad :'( :'( :'( as the vet got half a case in of the pellets and half a case of the hay in just for me. at least faline the bunny is eating them. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: thanks for all your replies. it is so damn hot today and hotter tomorrow and right up to tuesday. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: think i am going to melt! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: hugs and cuddles to you and your fur babies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

the postage was absoloutly hurrendous for my cavy cuisine pellets from sph supplies. i had to pay a normal charge (£5.00 ish) and and extra £15 pounds, just because we're on an island, it never normally costs any extra :( and now just to top it all off LOL they don't even like it! ;D ::)

My lot go made for Cavy Cuisine, but I do agree it is horribly expensive. A group of us put in an order with SPH Supplies when we all need something so that we spend over the £50 limit which entitles us to free P&P. I am seriously thinking that I am going to have to start mixing in some Pets at Home pellet (only other stuff my lot would eat) because I get through so much CC :'( and its costing me a fortune. Shame we can't find somewhere that we can get it where it is reasonably priced.
