Oxbow Urinary Support -

http://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/products/type/detail?object=8430

Has anyone ever used these for their UTI/Cystitis prone piggies or have any reviews on them? A friend is kindly sending me a weeks worth to see if Porche likes them or if they prove effective. If so, I will be purchasing a box for her.

I Would like to know what everyone thinks of them, as people say 'you can never go wrong with oxbow' ;).

Information/ingredients and their properties -

NEW from Oxbow! Natural Science Urinary Support is a high-fiber supplement containing various beneficial ingredients to support the overall urinary health of your pet. Cranberry and Dandelion Leaf support urinary health, while herbs such as astragalus root support renal function. More specifically, Dandelion and Marshmallow Root are duiretics, Astralagus Root is an anti-inflammatory and supports renal function. Pumpkin seed helps relieve spasms/cramping from urinary disorders, while Cranberry is an antimicrobial that may help prevent urinary tract infections. Free of additives, artificial color and preservatives.

I haven't tried these myself but have tried the digestive ones.

Looking at the ingredients they look ok as they have glucosamine in. The only thing that worries me is the cranberry as though it is commonly believed to help with bladder infections, if it is interstitial cystitis it can actually have an adverse effect (I saw evidence recently of a pig passing blood clots after being given cranberry juice, they had very severe IC), however, the amount may be negligible. Are you using anything like Cystease or Glucosamine already?

I bought some of these and have only given one each as then I read contains Molasses and freaked out! Was going to post so glad someone else has :) says ok for chins too but molasses are not good for chins!

Can't believe I missed the mollasses. It is in loads of pellets too.

The others look ok, though anyone feeding a grainless diet may want to avoid because of the Barley. I think though as they would only be having 1 tablet a day it is ok to give them. If I remember right the digestive ones also have some ingredients I wouldn't want to feed in a pellet but are ok if given in a small amount like this.

I'm concerned about the Algae (fat) the gum I can't pronounce and cane molasses?
Not sure about algae, have never seen it in anything piggy related before, I have had blue algae in my smoothies but am sure it's not the same thing.

Omg! I was so close to buying some of these when I was ordering from viovet the other day! I wanted my boys to be a healthier (they already are really healthy) but as they were quite expensive I decided to just leave them! I'm so glad someone has pointed out the ingredients! Thank u hah

I still say they are ok to feed as they are only 1 tablet a day, so is not like you are feeding a whole bowlful of slightly undesirable ingredients.

Oh yeah of course! I probably would feed one a week just because I know it would be helping but any bad ingredients aren't being build up in my little men hehe aww I love my boys!

These sound really interesting, tempted to try them to see if they help Tangos bladder issues. Thanks for sharing, and thanks also to those who assessed the ingredients!

Oh wow, thank you for all of the replies. I have taken into account what you have all said - I agree with the fact molasses isn't good for a pellet, however, I believe feeding 1 of these tablets wouldn't do any harm in the longrun. Seeing as oxbow is quite popular and trusted in regards to small pet products I doubt they would add anything that could make a urinary problem worse.

As said, I am going to see if the weeks course which I am being kindly sent by a friend proves effective before buying a box of my own. They are expensive but hopefully worth it.

I agree can u post a review once u have used them all?!?

Thanks Hun x I was considering buying them but never did so tht would be gr8 if u could do tht for me x

I gave one each to my boys yday and today and they loved them. Hubby has reported they seem ok so I too will give you my thoughts after the bottle is finished amd see how Leah and I compare our experiences. Always interested to see others views :)

Oh thank you, I would be interested to know how your boys get on. My friend was sent some of these too and her piggie also enjoyed them, which is surprising because they can be quite fussy with treats :)

I found these last year and thought I'd give them a try as one of my pigs, Milo has lots of bladder issues so wondered if they would help. I have given one to each of my pigs daily for the past 7/8 months and they seem pretty good and my piggies go mad for them! I will be continuing to use them and hopefully they will continue to keep their bladders healthy. :)

I've been giving mine a slice of beetroot each twice a week as I'd heard it was good for preventing bladder issues. Can anyone confirm this? Even if its not true they enjoy it anyway even if they look like vampire piggies afterwards!

Further to my responses above, I have today been given further information of the effect of cranberry on pigs with Interstitial Cystitis (and humans too) and I would now only give these to pigs who either had no bladder issues or "normal" cystitis. I would not give these 2 pigs with Interstitial cystitis. An example of this is that in humans with IC cranberry has been know to cause ulcers.
