Hi,

I have recently been giving my piggies Oxbow Western Timothy Hay and they love it !

This may sound a funny question, but can i give them this hay "unlimited" or should it be fed in moderation?

Many Thanks

no unlimited hay is the order of the day 80% of their diet should be hay! :)

Yep, unlimited, it's a grass hay so you can't really overdo it!

It's the legume hays you need to give in moderation - alfalfa being the biggie of that group.

Online - The Hay Experts, Animal Magic Pet Supplies and SPH Supplies each sell all sizes. :)

Havnt got a clue when it comes to hay lol!
Just wondered what are the 'Legume hays' and why do you need to give in moderation?

Many thanks

It's very high in Calcium Issy. BUT your three ladies need it right now as do their growing babies and once they are born the babies will need it too so get some Alfalfa hay for now.

Blanche can have grass hays. I feed Oxbow Timothy and Orchard grass and they go down a treat!

Legume hays are higher in both calcium and protein, so ok for growing piggies (up to 6 months) and ok for pregnant/nursing sows, but shouldn't be fed too much to adults (6 months +) who haven't the use for the excess calcium and protein.

When feeding an older pig and younger pig it can bring about a dilemma, but it's fine to mix the legume hay with a grass hay (timothy, orchard grass, oat, brome, rye, meadow).

Some types of legume hay:

Alfalfa / Lucerne
Clover

Alfalfa/lucerne being the most widely marketed legume hay.
