after the loss of my little man fluffy monster a couple of days ago :0 one of my friends suprised me with a new little sow to keep poke company. as she is pining for fluffy 8.... the new piggy has alot of ickyness round her eye and is VERY tiny. she fit through the bars in the run (which are no bigger then a inch), i nealy lost her. i'll get her into the vets next week but does anyone have any idea what the dry sticky stuff round her eyes could be?

I got 2 piggies from P@H about a year ago and they had an upper respiratory infection when I got them, the first sign was also a funny eye which I noticed in the shop but the P@H person said it was fine.

It sounds like it could be the same

The dry stickystuff could be the usual fluid they get to clean their eyes with (not sure what its called) or it could be the sign of an eye infection / URI. Artie and Harvey were from PAH, Harvey was fine healthy etc. but Artie first of all had an eye infection it was weepy, crusty and he couldnt see at all out of his eye and then the following weeks had an underlying URI. :( Horrible!

I'd suggest keeping her off sawdust for the time being it seems to aggrivate both illnesses, and just keep on eye on her. Any signs of 'fluffy' dull fur, wheezing, coughing, discharge from nose, weightloss etc then try to see a vet sooner :)

Just to show you some pics of an eye infection:

This is Artie eye in the beginning, his eyes eventually seeled shut with the gunk we had to bathe his eye every two hours otherwise it would just seal and become hard:

Artie and Harvey you can notice the difference:

Very, very, very ill Artie fighting off his URI and eye infection:

Hope it is just the eye cleaning fluid and nothing more serious! :)

maybe it is a common P@h problem if it has happened to you as well AudioHeart :(

The boys were in seperate containers in the adoption center, Harvey they thought was a girl but is in fact a boy so they brought him back, and Artie had no history. Just unwanted. :(

I never, ever, ever wanted to buy another animal from them again ever! I wanted to rescue but i recived a PAH hamster for my birthday....three days into owning my hamster he fits, turns out hes blind in one eye and suffers from a condition where when his blood sugar levels drops he'll fit, its a condition only seen in old animals my vet was surprised and thinks this is because hes come from a bad breeder, the animals have been overbreed etc :( so sad 8...

:(

8... I lost one on my P@H piggies in January, the hammies I got from there all passed away within months. Can't remember the last time I went in there.

Still better than most of the local pet shops

:( I'm so sorry! :(

I dunno i think sometimes they're just as bad as the rest of them! Although we do have a really, really good local pet shop near us she only breeds and sells Budgies, they are in huge avaries at the back of the shop/garden. Beautifully kept birds, and she always takes backs the birds noone wants and never over breeds. It makes a change to those shops that dont have the intrest of the animals at heart :)

oh dear. it does look abit like that audioHeart not as bad and just in one eye. :( poor archie, glad hes ok now. i ring vets tomorrow.
i'v never had any problem with poke, shes never had anything wrong with her and she was from pets at home. i didn't want to buy from there because of what other people said. but this poor piggy i have now, i understand why know one likes it. x

Yeah it started, when we got him in just one eye not to bad and then it just seemed to get worse overnight i looked like such a bad owner when i went to the vets the next day :x

If you do have any problems and she needs vet treatment, you can get a full refund from PAH they pay for any treatment within the first month of purchase. So dig out the bill if you still have it and go into the store after you've been to the vets.

They paid the full emergancy vet bill for my hamster which was £50 but refused to accept that he was from a bad breeder ! grrr.

Hope shes okay xxxxxx

* thats a full refund for the vet bill and any on going treatment from that date. :)

my friend bought me her, luckly she kept the bill just incase. she said the woman health checked her first! jee wizz! they must employ idiots!

Ooohh thats good! Haha the fella did a health check on my boys, i did say to him 'his eye looks a little weepy' and he said 'ohhh hes just splashed some water on his face from the water bottle' mallethead

Doesnt surprise me, typical P@H, bloody place. Sorry. Sounds like a bit of conjuntivitis to me. Should eaily be sorted with some drops for a week or so. Or possibly an allergy maybe?

I hope it all goes well with the vet? Good luck and make sure your friend claims the vet bills back for you.

x.

My guinea pig could fit through bars that size until he was 3 or 4 weeks old, but was then too big . . . so it sounds like she's very young, or too small for her age which is common from pet shop piglets I think.

It's meant to be pretty common that baby guinea pigs get a bit of a sore eye, and it's nothing serious, necessarily, just bath it twice a day with some cooled boiled water with sea salt in it. But that usually happens in younger guinea pigs, like newborn ones, so maybe that's not it, so it's worth going to the vet anyway :)

thankyou guys! shes going for a checkup on monday.
yes she is very tiny, didn't think she would be able to fit through the gaps in the run. i was shocked!
her eye doesn't look to bad today. i don't keep my pigs on sawdust, they get fleece :)
shes on her own at the mo till i get the ok from the vets :) xx

aww bless her, the last time I went in P@H their piggie babies were just tiny.
Good luck with the vets hun, I suppose the stress of moving to P@H (which has to be the loudest shop ever), probably being put with new cage-mates and kept on sawdust will be enough to induce an URI in any piggie.
Sending her lots of snuggles and vibes, are you just bathing her eye for the time being? xx

yer i'v wiped it with some cooled down boiled water. :) she wasn't happy.
i'll let you all know how she gets on at the vets :)
shes coming out of her shell already, very noisy little girl :(|) :(|):(|) xx
