Well yesterday while in town with my boyfriend I went to P@H for the first time in god knows how long. I really needed some decent hay asap since I had ran out and my local small pet shop didn't have that good quality hay when I looked. So I walk in with my boyfriend saying it will just take 2 minutes. Go to look at the hay, pick out a couple of nice looking bags, and head for the counter. Well my boyfriend wanted to look at the chinchillas rolleyes. And then we get caught up and look at the other small animals like rats and gerbils. Then we saw the guinea pig enclosures. They all seemed pretty active and healthy and I saw a gorgeous white and cream coloured piggy scampering about (Although they didn't have signs saying which enclosure was male and which was female :S)
Then we to look at the rabbits, some nice little dutch and lionheads looking cute and stuff. But then I see the most gorgeous, biggest rabbit I have ever seen. He is in this enclosure all by himself looking too hot for comfort and lonely and I feel so sorry for him and wanted to take him home right that second :( He had these huge floppy ears and this sad expression on his face. I Felt so sad for him but unfortunately he was £80...My boyfriend loved him too and also noticed he looked quite sad too. He said if he had the money he would have gotten him for me to take home. We watched him for ages and I nearly felt like I was going to cry because he looked so sad. He was so huge and beautiful but here he was all lonely and bothered in a pet shop. I couldn't take him home and I had to leave him there 8... I might see if he is there next week with my boyfriend...

i think you saw a house rabbit, which basically is a pet like a cat or dog, who wanders around your house rather than in a cage etc, they do tend to laze about sprawled out so i wouldn't worry too much.

Yeah it did say house rabbit on the sign. He was so lovely :( £80 did sound like a lot to me but I suppose it would help stop someone from buying him just on a whim

yes maybe, although i have to say i did nt think PAH would be too bothered about that, was he a giant breed? i think they cost more, but still.... £80! i know how hard tho it is when you see an animal that looks like it needs "saving", it is so hard to walk away x

Yeah he was some breed of giant but I wasn't sure. He was so beautiful. He looked too hot in there :/
It was very hard to walk away. I wanted to just give him a cuddle and bring him home with me

P@H local to me are pretty good - the animals are all looked after although I don't go in there now so take OH's word for it.
Maybe this bunny could be an early Christmas pressie between you and your boyfriend if you put half each ?/ :x

If he is still there I hope so :) My boyfriend really liked him and said he would love to take him home too. My mum would probably kill me but I don't care :)

I know you feel sad for him and want to save him but if you buy him they'll just replace him with another one. Then this will keep happening and you can't save them all unfortunately.
If no one buys him or any other animal there will be no demand for them and they won't end up in a hot cramped cage.
There are lots of rabbits in rescues desperate for a home and a giant rabbit especially is not for the impulse buy.

Awww I cant go and look at the pets in pets at home as i always want to take them all home.

You should go get the rabbit, was it one of those big German ones?
ive seen them before and they are gorgeous x

I know I am reluctant to go in there as well :/ I just wanted to go in and get out without being drawn in by some poor animal. But then my boyfriend had to look at the chinchillas lol. He looked like a British giant or a French lop giant. I couldn't quite tell :S And I don't think it said on the sign

I don't shop in any pet shop that sells animals any more. It can be hard sometimes, there's a P@H less than 5 minutes away and I do think sometimes I could just pop and get a water bottle from there rather than ordering it on the internet and waiting for it etc. I actually gave in once recently and went in. It was what I needed, I walked round the shop and straight out. It reminded me that any money I give them is supporting them selling animals, even if I'm not buying an animal. So I avoid temptation and instead of popping in to see the animals I look at all the piggies on the rescue websites and oh and aw over them instead.
Stay strong! Support the rescues! ;)

Just something to be aware of!

If you did decide to get a house rabbit (whether the one you've seen or from a rescue), they are notorious wire and cable chewers! rolleyes My sister had a fantastic house rabbit for years, and even though he was 'litter trained', he still chewed everything. She really enjoyed having him though, he used to sleep on her bed!

I've had rabbits in the past and ours used to eat our carpets and wires whenever we brought them in! We used to have to tape all wires out of the way or just watch him/her like a hawk...you couldn't do that though if it was a house rabbit.

Keep us informed of what you decide!

You could always have a chat with someone at P@H and tell them of your concerns for the rabbit's welfare - cage size, overheated etc.

Here's their website http://littlebramblesguineapigrescue.co.uk/index.php?&MMN_position=1:1
Plymouth is one of the areas they cover. The website says no guinea pigs available to adopt at the moment but it hasn't been updated since September so I'd give them a call.
When ever I've been looking for a friend for a piggy the rescue has let me take them with me and put them in a run with another one to monitor and see if they get on.
It's fascinating seeing how they react to each other.

I don't think Little Brambles has rabbits.

Oh I know whenever we bring Rosie in the frontroom I have to stuff every little crevice with a pillow or something :)) Just so she can't get to wires. One time my mum came in with a little shopping and put it down on the sofa and Rosie was straight up there checking it out and trying to chew on anything she could rolleyes
She also really loves sitting on our little poufe thingy. One day my brother put his coat and bag on the poufe and Rosie really wasn't impressed. She jumped on top of it and tried to give it a good chew as if it say "What the hell is this on MY seat". Thankfully my brother didn't see :))

Oh thanks for the links :) Ill give little brambles a call
Oh yeah woodside has lots of rabbits and guinea pigs but they are a little odd about things :S One even suggested to spay a female. They don't seem to have much knowledge and stuff :/

I thought when i went into my local P&H in Derby last weeekend that the giant rabbit i saw was a one off...obviously not! Is this a new thing they are doing? I think it's so wrong for these animals to be sat in such a small cage and also having no company, the one i saw looked sad aswell:..

I am not a fan of P@H grrrr

I've seen giant rabbits in there, several times over the years. They always look miserable :(

My sister had a british giant a couple of years back and he was so lovely. He would wander into the kitchen looking for vegi's and would sit on the sofa :) But these looked so sad :( Just wanted to make them feel better, you know?
