Hi, I was just wondering whether anybody else gives their guinea it ab-lib? My girls are a good weight, are pretty stream lined (not podgy) and very energetic when out playing.. I top up every night, if bowls are empty, my boys go through a full bowl (level) every night, but Biscuit is generally a big piggie, and isn't overweight..

My piggies have access to hay and nuggets all the time and I only restrict their access to fresh food.

I used to feed them Gerty Guinea Pig, but they were like walking dumplings.. Picky with what they ate, only eating the tasty bits..
In the last 3 years, I have only fed nuggets, and they haven't looked back.. none can stand GGP.. they love these nuggets, won't eat any other (have tried them on Burgess nuggets, turned their noses up).. guess they know what's best:))

what nuggets you feed them make them never turned back? :)

Pets at home own brand.. they eat them out of my hand, they really adore themx) It took a few weeks to wean them off Gerty, but it's worth the wait ;)

my boys have access to pellets all the time as I work, they can feed when they want. They have a bowl of Blackcurrant and Oregano burgess nuggets and a bowl of P@H muesli a day... They're not too fussy with the muesli so I let them have it.
I reduced the fresh food about 6-8 weeks ago and they're much healthier than before.

** this is just my opinion - based on my experience with nuggets**

Just be careful about how much you feed them. I used to feed mine nuggets (p@h and burgess excel blackcurrant&oregano) and she had access to it at all times, but she started eating more nuggets than hay and veg. Ever since I've had over grown teeth problems that will unlikely ever be solved as the roots have moved (2 GAs and dentals in 2 months). After speaking to a vet (exotic specialist) I was advised to cut down nuggets to the bare minimum as they do NOTHING for wearing down teeth!
I have since cut out nuggets from her diet and now shes back eating hay and hopefully *crosses fingers* wearing down her teeth. (shes been 3 months with out a dental and still eating)
Also since cutting down on nuggets shes not so overweight, down from 1.1kg to 840g. Shes so much more active now and no rolls of fat under her front legs!

I guess that's aimed for me. Thanks for advice, I'll watch for any sign of problems. I've already cut their veggie intake by 2/3, if on top of that I remove the pellets, I think they're going to pack their bags and go live somewhere else!

Its not aimed at anyone, just in general to people reading the post and for BonBon2010 . Sorry if it seemed it was aimed at you, I quote if i want to aim an opinion at someone.
:)

My lot love Burgess timothy hay with herbs and their hay, so i don't think they'll be giving that up any time soon :)) You should see their little faces light up when I fill the hay rack up, they're in guinea pig heaven x)

Mine won't eat nuggets at all, they all hate them!

I had two guineas stay in summer that were on the p@h ones, they cleaned the bowl every night and were not the smallest of guineas...personally I am happy if mine leave a bit but the hay racks are almost empty as then I know their teeth are being seen to!

Just wish they would understand my moanings about the hay shortage and the increase in price, lol.

I was told recently that nuggets can give them problems because they are so concentrated? i was also told pasture mix(horse feed) and goat mix is good for them my lot hate burges excell nuggets they dont really eat much dry food to be quite honest mainly hay and their veggies xx

Mine absolutely adore the P@H nuggets, even though when we just had Gertie she liked the Burgess ones, now none of them will eat anything else. They love their hay too though and wait by my feet as I restock the hay trays. They go mad for their veggies too.

Mine hate the nuggets, will only eat the muesli! And they eat lots of hay and all the veg they get given. I am happy with there weight really at the mo so i'm gonna stick with what i do for now :) x

They say a lot of the food we enjoy is harmful to us rolleyes.. if we went by everything suggested, we would live in either a bubble, or go back to living in caves.. the modern world is a lot more harmful than a bowl full of nuggets..
