I'm curious to know if buying guineas from P@H is a bad idea? It's just that we need two just-weened females and cannot find any through the normal routes we have used before with success. I'm sure a lot of people will say that we shouldn't but I'm interested to hear if people have had a positive experience?

Thanks

I have had a good experience with pets at home, as I bought my two babies from there. Except some information they gave me was wrong, but I did the opposite which they said as I was already on TGPF. Of course I do not regret buying my girlies from pets at home, but if I were to buy more pigs, I would rehome a piggy from a rescue.

Frank was bought from P@H, then adopted by me, I have ongoing problems.
I adopted Bert from P@H (he had problems in there) and now I'm seemingly possibly having problems with him.

I'd always go to a rescue now.

I guess it's the luck of the draw and unfortunately I am well and truly unlucky!

Both of my pigs out of their adoption centre died very suddenly last year, they weren't old and it was a total shock. I would never judge anyone for choosing whatever way they like to give piggies a lovely home though, you just have to be very careful as you have no history of the pigs and generally they don't come into store in good condition - due to the nature of how the poor things are raised. :(

Mmm that's sounding like a mixed experience…….

I got my boys from pets at home.
The lady was telling me how to care for them but as I'd done my research I could show off hehe. I have had no problems (touch wood)
if I'd known about rescues I may have used a different route.
its personal choice. At least you tried different routes.
I don't regret my boys. My cat does though lol

I think most members probably bought their first piggies but with most rescues brim full with piggies it is far better to adopt from a reputable rescue. You can find loads on the rescue locator at top of page but if your local rescue isn't on there, it doesn't mean it's a bad rescue. It might be just unknown to us so ask if anyone on here knows of it could be a well kept secret x

Hi and thanks
Stewybus…. it's defo the way to go but unfortunately already tried and nobody has what we need right now. Hence this secondary path.

I have, in the past, bought two piggies from P@H. Gin and Tonic lived to about 4 and a half years. Also bought two piggies from a small pet shop in town years ago. One lived to 3 and a half, got sick and died, due to my lack of experience. The other lived to about 5 years. All those that I have at present, I got from 2 local breeders.

In the past I have gotten girls from p@h and had no problems. They were just very shy when I first got them home probably because they hadn't been handled much.

Hi! Why do you need just weaned baby girls? Any guinea pig should be ideally at least 400g before leaving its home, so it is sturdy enough to cope with the huge changes in their lives and not fall ill.

I have had an unplanned pet shop pregnancy, which is the reason why I have gone strictly rescue since.

Can someone near Bristol suggest a rescue that Pinki could go to? I'm sure there is a recommended rescue in Gloucester? Round here the rescues sadly have no shortage of baby pigs, theres a massive back yard breeder problem.

You are unlikely to get very young girls at P@h anyway as the ones I see look 10-12 weeks to me.

There are at least 2-3 rescues in the wider Bristol area - Yate and Windwhistle Warren. You can find the contacts in your rescue locator.

You also run the risk of the piggies being pregnant due to mis sexing at P@H. A few years ago my friend's hamster bought from there had babies. I took in 5 and had to give up my whole utility room to hamster cages for 2 years. We kept them all between us. We didnt want to see them go to unknown homes!

Hi all and thanks
Sorry I meant 2 to 3 months by just weaned. As I said I've spoken to the rescues nearby and no joy. I'm sure something will come up though.
