Eriathwen
Adult Guinea Pig
I remember as soon as I saw that little face, I knew you were meant to be part of our family. I lost count of the number of emails I sent to the RSPCA to adopt you, but they were closed due to the pandemic and told me to wait until they announced they we reopening, which I did
I checked their Facebook page religiously at least once a day, and their website too, every day for weeks and finally there it was! You'd had some interest but everyone else wanted to wrap you in cotton wool, not allow you to be the guinea pig you needed to be, and wanted to keep you alone.
As soon as you were handed to me by your foster mum, you shoved your nose into my neck and started licking me
I loved you already and it seemed to be mutual!
Meeting your ladies wasnt all plain sailing, Bailey certainly kept you on your toes to start with until you learned some proper boar etiquette! But you loved them all, too.
You grew into an absolutely huge gentle giant, with the vet commenting on more than one occasion how being blind certainly didn't stop you finding your food!
Unfortunately you began losing weight, nothing concerning to start with as you really were large, but with lumps in your armpits last year cancer was a concern. But you soldiered on unbothered, until Monday when you very suddenly began passing blood, out of nowhere you went from my funny little man who came running to climb the bars when you heard me, to a very sad, sore boy sulking in the corner. You fought your syringe feed last night, opting to tuck your head back into my neck to give me another wash! From the first to last day I knew you, you were always licking me
Then this morning came, time for xrays and maybe surgery, answers to why you were so suddenly unwell at last..although deep down I already knew this was cancer. I have never seen a pig strain as you did with cystitis and you also didn't match the signs of a stone, but still I hoped.
I hoped we could still fix this right up until I went to put you in the carrier and you were on your way, I have seen enough piggies pass naturally to know it was time, but that you were hanging on as best as you could.
You were suffering, and there was no bringing you back or fixing your bladders cancerous tumour, so once at the vet we made the decision to help you on your way.
To say I feel robbed is an understatement, you were such a lovely boy, who should have had many years left with us had you not been the product of a hoarding situation, where you were all left to breed out of control. I hope the life we gave you made up for the first few months you had, we certainly managed to squeeze a lifetimes love into just a couple of years.
Sleep well, handsome Paddington. I hope you're back with Thistle, Coco and Clover.
