Drezella
Adult Guinea Pig
Paddy & Rohan - Day 1
I thought I'd intermittently post an update of how we are getting on. I'm a newby piggie owner who is very lucky to give a home to these beautiful boys.
I picked up the boys last night from the rescue centre, so they've not even been with me 24 hours. With this in mind I was really shocked to see them out during the day whilst I was doing my jobs in the kitchen, as I thought that it would be weeks before they'd feel comfortable. They've had such a big change as they used to live in semi outdoor conditions on wood based bedding, and now they've moved into my house with a C&C cage. Paddy (the black and white boar) let me sit next to him whilst he was eating and almost took some food off me, brave boy. Rohan (the black eyed white boar) was really clever and figured out how to use the ramp, he's not been out as much as Paddy, but has eaten outside whilst I was nearby, so I'm chuffed with that considering it's their first day with me. They've really enjoyed their veggies, it's seems like they have a particular taste for carrots and Paddy has been going at the peppers like there's no tomorrow, so at least I know that they'll eat those.
I felt a bit mean though as I've had to do two bed cleaning/poo picking sessions already today as they've been weeing and pooing for England and I didn't want them to sleep in their own poo and wee. I had to gently tip them out of their beds so that I could remove the soiled puppy pads from underneath them. I'm really conscious of stressing them out as I know that it's best to leave them alone to settle in at first, so I'm trying to only do what's necessary for their care. After some deliberation I decided that I would pick each of them up briefly just to check their 'man bits' as they had really saturated the bedding with urine, so I checked to make sure that they didn't have wee on their bellies/bottoms and thankfully they didn't, phew, I don't fancy trying to clean their bums just yet, they've had enough stress for one day. Anyway the beds are now back in and the boys are tucked up nicely.
Here's hoping that we get a nice little routine and that they settle even more in the coming days.
Whilst I had removed their beds to clean them my mum took the opportunity to take a few photos. Apologies that some of the pics are blurry. I'll get some better ones once they are more settled in.
