Hi, I have 2 teddy boar brothers now 15wks old and Padraig is 'maturing' more quickly than his brother Seamus. He does a lot more rumbling and mounting and dragging his bottom, although Seamus does some too. Padraig always has hay stuck in his penis from his activities. He smells very strongly of sperm; much more than I have noticed with any other boar I have had. They are in an indoor cage for the cold spell but will live outside in warmer weather. They have hemp bedding and I do a thorough clean every second day but it is Padraig himself that smells not the cage as Seamus doesn't smell at all (yet?). Is Padraig's bad smell going to lesson at all? All looks well with his penis and anus and he seems very healthy and happy, eating well and gaining weight and full of his little self. I will post a photo when my laptop is charged. Suggestions and comments appreciated.

Oh I just LOVE spellcheckers !

They are beautiful boys !

Has anyone got any advice about smelly boars?

I think he is running high on testosterone and I am hoping it won't end up in a fight. I have read the post on boars and I am a bit worried but they have two bowls of food and two igloos so Seamus has somewhere to go. Seamus doesn't seem too bothered and is strutting his stuff too. As Padraig is the more dominant I feed him and groom him first. Maybe Padraig just needs a bath! :)

I have ten boars and some of them just seem to 'smell' more than others; I'm not even certain it's related to dominance, in our case (or health, or age, or hygiene, etc.). Some just seem to be smelly boys!

I think if Padraig is happy and healthy, and you can keep his man-parts and anal sac clean, and you're also sure it's not a 'urinary tract infection' smell ... then it's not too much of a concern. But a bath never hurts, either - though Padraig may have a different opinion about that :D

They're beautiful boys - teddies are lovely!

Thank you :) He is lively and happy and doesn't seem troubled weeing. What else should I be looking for?

Aside from 'liveliness' and 'happiness' (which are a bit subjective, but usually pretty good indicators of health and wellbeing if you know your pigs well!), I also weigh my boys weekly. Everybody has a different opinion about weighing ... but I feel unexplained weight loss (or stalled weight gain in youngsters like yours) is a great indicator that something isn't quite right with a piggy.

And if he's weeing OK, no straining / squealing, no blood / sludge in the bedding, no sour smell with the urine, eating and drinking normally, etc., I'd say a UTI is unlikely. But if you have any doubts, a vet visit never does any harm - it's a great idea to find a good (i.e. pig-savvy) vet before you need one in an emergency, anyhow. That said, if everything else seems OK, it really does sound like you just have a naturally smelly boy - just one of the many joys of keeping boars ;)

Well Padraig is always out first to see who has come in the room and does lots of manly rumbling, mounting and popcorns around the cage. He doesn't speed around quite as fast and furious as Seamus because Seamus thinks he is related to Lewis Hamilton! They both shove the igloos around and climb on them and Padraig was recently throwing a kitchen roll middle around. I'd say he is quite lively and entertaining. No sludge or blood in wee :)

I believe in regular weighing too and weigh the boys every Friday but I have just weighed him to check and his weight is still climbing at a steady pace. I just washed his bits n'bobs and he wasn't over enthusiastic about that! but returned to rumbling and shoving things around when I put him back in. As I say he has a bit of hay in his penis nearly every time I pick him up (which I gently remove) so has definitely been strutting his stuff regularly. Seamus does a bit of rumbling, mounting, etc but I'm sure Padraig thinks he is Harry Styles. In his case - a smelly Harry Styles (I have never met Harry Styles to comment on whether or not he smells). Thank you for your comments/suggestions :)
