For the past couple of days Billy has been making very high pitched squeaking sounds when he does a poo.

He is eating and drinking well, his usual chirpy self. His poos are firm and normal colour, perhaps a tiny bit dryer than normal but nothing very unusual apart from the noise he has started to make.

He is only a year or so old and I have checked that there isn't any obvious blockage or soreness that could be causing him pain.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing him to make this sound?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi love i'd be off to the vets......sounds like he has an infection :(
If you have a vet who can help you please go visit for some meds.........if not ring Vedra and ask her advice her number is on here (i'm sure you're from UK)
I wish you all the best for Billy xoxoxoxoxoxo
is he eating and drinking still ? he has to keep eating his hay, pellets and some veg and drinking water to keep his system going
Please refer to other threads to find your nearest piggie savvy vet or rodentologist in UK xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I have a very helpful and reliable vet who I trust to look after him - I will make an appointment.

He is eating well, pellets, hay and veggies and drinking well, nothing unusual there at all.

Is there anything I can do in the mean time before I get him to a vet that might help him with the pain?

I'm sorry but who is Vedra?

Is there anything I can do to help in the meantime before I get to a vet?

Thank you for the links, I have been reading about impaction but he is not impacted at all as far as I can see.

The more I read the more it seems to me like bladder stones... :(

It could be cystitis or stones, but the dry poops sounds like dehydration.

For pain, 0.2ml children's Calpol or childrens Nurofen will help, also give plenty of water. Cranberry juice is useful if cystitis is the problem.

Vedra runs the Cambridge Cavy Trust, specialist guinea pig hospital, in Huntingdon. She's not a vet but is highly specialised in guinea pig medical care, you can get telephone advice or make an appointment to go and see her.

Make sure that he drinks enough! Painful pooping can be down to cystitis/bladder stones, as well as the more usual painful peeing.

It is worth to make an appointment at your vets. If it is cystitis-connected ask for septrin as antibiotic; it works better on urinary tract infections than baytril (which is the only officially listed antibiotic so far, but quite harsh on the guts). If he has to have antibiotics, make sure you get some probiotic to counter the effect on the guts.

Don't wait for too long, as the pain will only get worse!

Thank you all for your advice. I texted Vedra earlier and she has asked me to call back at 8:30 this evening.

I put Billy on some newspaper in his run and have been watching him and it is when he pees that he is squeaking not when he is pooping. I have syringed him some unsweetened cranberry juice and water so I know he has had some fluids and he has peed twice already making less of a squeak than he has been.

I am going to keep and eye on him this evening, speak to Vedra for some advice and then make a vets appointment in the morning...I hope he isn't in too much pain poor thing :(

Looks like he has cystitis. Keep up the painkiller and the cranberry juice, as much as he will take!

Ask your vet for a x-ray (no need for anaesthetic) to make sure there are no bladderstones involved.

All the best for your poorly boy. Mine has just had cystitis....

sorry to ransack this thread but SCruffy sometimes has this problem, he did today, sometimes his poos get stuck to his bottom and i have to get them for him, hes had it for a while now, but has this really strong thick white goo round his bum which is always there and really smells loads. could it be a early sign ofkidney stones. he doesnt do it all the time, just occasionally.

Billy has peed another couple of times and made a squeak and was fine pooing so this is definitely a wee problem!

Ringing Vedra in a few minutes...

Did you manage to speak to Vedra Mittenpie? It does sound like bladder problems, I would get him checked over by your vet and definitely press for an x-ray (no GA needed) as this will confirm whether or not he has a stone or sludge build up. As has been said before, Septrin is the ab of choice for bladder issues. Out of interest, is Billy normally a good drinker?

Wishing Billy a speedy recovery.
