Hello
I am new to the forum and was hoping for some help and advice.
My guinea pig Zero :) jumped from my arms yesterday and broke his toe.
I took him to the vets today and she inserted a small stitch to the paw of his foot to stitch the broken toe that was pointed to the ceiling to the other straight toe. She then taped up his foot with cello tape and plaster tape to avoid him catching it. He is also on antibiotics.
** My question is should i put him back with his guinea pig friend Gizmo or should i keep him in another cage until its better. The vet thinks it could be 3-6 weeks to heal. I'm worried they might not get on if left to long apart.
Thank you
Beth, Zero and Gizmo. xx

Hello, Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about Zero's foot :( I would keep them together in all honesty as long as their is no fighting going on.

Is he eating, drinking okay? Did the vet give you any pain relief for him?

The vet gave me no pain relief other than the injection he had in the paw before the stitch. she did say if he starts yelping in pain to call her between 9am and 7pm. haven't yet seen him eat. Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it x

That injection will last 24 hours and was more than likely metacam, they can give you a version to give at home orally, it is a anti-inflammatory and pain killer so works on two fronts.

Could you try hand feeding him a little veg?

I agree that he needs pain relief, the injection will be wearing off by now and a pig in pain doesn't eat.

Tried him with his fav cucumber but he looked away. He is now however eating the hay i put by his hut and he seems to not want to put weight on his leg but is trying to wash him self with the cello taped foot. Do you think i should go and ask for some pain relief i have to go the vets to collect the dog tablets later today. Thank you x

I would certainly ask about it, yes.

Hopefully but it may take a while for the inflammation to go down and the pain to lessen. If a human had broken their toe they would be on pain relief for a good while.

I phoned and the vet that dealt with my guinea pig has left. The receptionist is going to try to contact her. Will pain relief effect my piggies antibiotic treatment for his respiratory problem ? Sorry for so many questions. x

The painrelief is either called Metacam or Loxicom (it's the exact same thing) - many vet's prescribe it alongside antibiotics so no, it won't affect how they work. :)

Brilliant thank you - the bottle says 'Baytril' He is now eating parsley - going pick up pain relief at 4 hopefully. Then got a check up every week for next 4 weeks :) x

Ok great :). Probiotics such as Pro C by Vetark (available at Pets at Home) or BioLapis (available at your vet) is also reccomended alongside baytril as it can be harsh on their stomachs. I personally put it in their water, but other people like to directly syringe it or sprinkle on veggies x

They currently have vitamin solution with extra vit C on their nuggets would this be ok? x

It wouldn't do any harm to offer the additional Vitamin C, but unfortunately that isn't a probiotic. If your piggie is eating and acting fine then it may be that he is coping well on the Baytril. :)

Thank you - would you still recommend the pain relief if he is eating hay and veg as it has only been 4 hours since the injection? Thank you again x

Was the injection definitely Metacam? I didn't know it was only 4 hrs. I would still get some for tomorrow as when it wears off he will feel it x

@sport_billy Because the injection was today and he is walking around and eating should i still get pain relief for tomorrow for him? Thanks

As the injection was today it will last for 24 hours, I would ask for some Metacam after this to give at home from tomorrow onwards once the injection has worn off. Metacam is fine to take with the antibiotic Baytril which he is on for his URI.

I was under the impression it was given yesterday. Sorry.

Good news on the parsley eating, sounds like he is picking up :)

Thank you - i went to the vets and she said that he was only given a numbing injection and that if he needs pain relief then he will need an injection tomorrow. He is now eating his veg and hay as normal so don't think will go unless he stops eating as i don't want to put him through the car stress and then the injection stress if he is eating fine and moving around happily x

Zero has been hoppiling along on his poorly stitched toe and has eaten hay and vegetables. he even attempted the hay loft and got up the ramp successfully :) Gizmo seems to be treating him no different so fingers crossed he is on his way to recovery. Just need to get them both over this URI now! xx

I would still aquire some pain relief hun as piggies are prey animals by nature they hide their illnesses and pain well. He may be eating and bombing around but since its broken he will mostly i would imagine be in pain of some level. aquire a dose for a day or too of pain relief and he will thank you for it :) healing vibes to him x
