My poor Ton!

Last month, this happened to him;

tonicwilly1.jpg

Quite often Ton passes a sperm 'tablet' which causes him discomfort. After his latest 'release', his penis was left hanging out for over an hour!
I cleaned him up (tad embarrassing), then gave him a warm bath and his penis then went back to it's normal place. Again he was a little uncomfortable. So a little Calpol helped.

Only, I was looking through my Piglopedia and came accross this;

Page 109 -
The boar is unanble to retract his penis into the prepuce. The tip of the penis is hanging outside the prepuce. It is often due to foreign bodies, such as seeds or shavings, being trapped in the prepuce folds. These should be gently removed and the prepuce rinsed in sterile saline. If infection occurs, the boar may become infertile, Paraphimosis is commnly seen in castrated boars, but it does not seem to bother them.

BUT. My piggies haven't been on shavings for a few months now. I no longer use them - just hay and paper and Ton has had a few 'releases' before this one. Also there was nothing 'caught', just happened following a sperm 'tablet'.
He is not castrated either.

But it does sound like it was this. Any other ideas/experience?

Re: Paraphimosis

I've seen it happen in men before...when I was nursing.

Sometimes it is simply that the foreskin is tighter than it should be and problems are occurring because of that. Of course in a man it is relatively simply prevented from happenning by circumcision. Other times it can be the result of an infection, I won't go into anymore detail as it probably isn't appropriate here!

I've only had this problem happen once with one of my entire boars and I think it was as a result of him getting frisky with his cage mate...another male. We had him neutered and he settled well with a female and this never happened again (he went to a friend so would have heard about it if it did!) I'm not suggesting this is a reason to neuter him, as in this case there may be very different reasons for this happenning. It could just well be the way he is made and there is nothing much to be done?

I don't think this has anything to do with bedding, it's more the result of natural male behaviour!

Thanks for the reply :)

Wouldn't let Ton be neutered anyway as he's 6 and a half! :)

Just really stunned me. It's not happened again though, thank goodness!

Neither would I :)

Well, theres obviously a lot of life left in the old lad yet ;)

Also I think if the boar glue dries and hardens then that can stop it going back in too :)

If only it did! When he passes one, he always eats everything! It may sound gross but apparently quiet tasty for piggies!

sorry kelly, this is gonna sound totally thick.....what is a sperm tablet? Obviously i know what sperm is, but is this something that happens regularly.

ok, bear with me.

Tonic gets frustrated and cannot relieve himself like humans (don't mean any of this to be crude), so every now and again he ejects a large 'tablet' (It's one big piece of sperm, hardened) of sperm.

When piggies mate, sperm is fluid like. But not in Tonic's case

:) Hope this makes any sense.

Thanks for replying so quickly, i have 2 boars and didnt know if this was something i shouldve been looking out for.......

Poor thing....must be painful! Takes all the fun out of it!

No probs. I have 4 boars and 8 sows, but had mainly boars throughout my childhood and never experienced anything like this with them! :)

I don't think it is something that happens to all boars all the time, think it's more of a might and maybe! :)

Tonni passing the sperm doesn't seem to hurt and he's perfectly fine during and after. It was more that his penis wouldn't retract that was a bit of a discomfort for him.

Tonni never ceases to amaze me! ;)

This can happen if anything gets stuck to the penis while it is exposed. A bit of hay is a common culprit, seeds especially. I haven't noticed that neutered boars are more prone to it.
Giving them a quick wash under the tap removing any debree and easing it back where it belongs should do the trick unless it has become sore or infected then salt water and a spot of a gentle disinfectant are indicated.

BUT, there was nothing there. It just happened after he was 'relieved' :)

Oh poor Ton! Sounds gross and painful. But am glad that he is in no pain! :)

Just a bit unusual and something that I had todeal with. Something you can have a little giggle over after :)

maybe that was why he was so moody the other day, re your other post, poor lad what a thing to happen, never seen it in any of mine

I left one of my rodents with his willy hanging out this morning when I went to work, I noticed it had come out at around 10pm last night although it could have been like that for a while.
a050.gif
I tried talking about it on here last week but I had my thread deleted.

Dunno how many hours it was stuck out for the last time, could have been all night too cos I went to bed but it was gone by the morning that time. My rodent lives with his brother but they don’t try and bonk each other, they like to fight.
a050.gif
It could be caused by an infection though cos they both squeak whilst peeing.

I picked up my rodent twice this morning (he don’t like it), the second time I picked him up I tried to get a good look but it was hard with him struggling all over but he was wet underneath that time. I thought he’d peed himself but after reading this thread maybe he’d ejaculated.

& he had a mat under a leg which I need to cut off but I couldn’t do it cos I live on my own and need more hands. If I wash his willy tonight I bet he won’t like it, he’s never been in the sink before, hope my mother will agree to come and help but I doubt it cos she’s mean and there’ll be stuff on TV.

So like I was saying in my deleted thread, how often are willys supposed to pop out?
f025.gif
Every day for short periods of time? Every few months? Like how often cos I don’t know?

My mum says she’s spoken to the woman at the pet shop and she says she’s heard of it before and not to worry unless it’s been out for weeks and has gone purple. She says to try vasaline so if Rumball’s willy’s still out when I get home tonight I’m gonna rub that on.
