Patsy's lost weight

Have you tried Emeraid Sustain? Its really energy dense and I've found it quite useful for keeping weight on piggies that need that bit extra.

Not got that in atm my Prime membership runs out today so I'll order this now and pop some oats and grated carrot in the SS Recovery + tonight.

Well 2 weeks ago Patsy's weight was 913g then last week it was 868g but she may have had an empty stomach and bladder so I really didn't worry too much at this stage. This morning she weighed in at 804g. I am now worried about her. She has been having extra oats with either grated carrot and/or oats for breakfast for a few weeks now as well as an extra top up of Recovery Food at night. Patsy has her face in the hay pile most of the time chomping away. She even falls asleep with her head in the hay pile. I'll be phoning the vet this morning. Maybe her Ovarian Cysts are causing her problems. Rachel (vet) did say to keep an eye on her for any symptoms. Apart from the loss in weight, I can't find anything else amiss. There is clearly something going on. When I adopted her in September her weight was 968g.

I really hope they can get to the bottom of whatever it is. Be good and keep munching Patsy.

It’s such a worry. Beautiful Patsy. Is she an “older” lady? Is her shape changing?

When I adopted Patsy I was told that she was 5 but the Rescue said it was a bit like Chinese Whispers as her previous owner had adopted her from someone else! So mine is the third home she's had. She def has ovarian cysts as you can feel them and they were checked on an ultrasound just to make sure that there wasn't something sinister going on. Her shape doesn't appear to be changing apart from the weight loss.

I am waiting to hear back from the vet.

Poor old girl, maybe it is time to discuss having the spay op done in case that's the issue, in case her weight loss gets worse? Our old boss lady Clover has also dropped some weight over the last few months, and she sends Patsy sympathetic old lady kisses, poor old big pig isnt big anymore, no dramatic weight loss week to week but she's shrunk gradually until she's actually the same weight as little Puggle! Jezzy and Clover will be off for an old lady MOT at the start of the school holidays, Jezzy is getting hormonal and Clover is getting bony round the hips so its time for a vet trip (and plenty oats and carrots for Clover) x

I do find in the older ladies that they go boney round the hip/tail end and then boney around the shoulders. But it’s hard to tell what’s just normal old age “vanishing pig syndrome” from any underlying issue so I think you’re spot on getting the vet to check her over again. Big hugs to Patsy x

The vet did say that she didn't want to spay Patsy unnecessarily as she wasn't showing any symptoms but would if she had to. I think the cysts are causing her problems and now is the time for the spaying op. As I've only had her for such a short time, I don't really know what her personality (pigsonality?) is other than shes a very kind and confident piggy who poops more than the others.

It must be a tricky decision at her age, to decide to proceed with an op, but if she is well in herself and the vet is confident it is safe it might be worth it.
Sending hugs, I've not had to make any hard decisions like that yet with my lot but I can see it wont be long, Jezzy and Clover are at least 4 and a half now... where did the time go?! My piggies who we got as babies and I'm used to thinking of as "the teenage gang" are all nearly 3 years old now!

Sending best wishes for Patsy, Clover and Jezzy. Hope you both get to the root of any problem weight loss x

I have every confidence in my vet Rachel. She saved Christian's life with his massive abdominal abscess a few years ago and successfully spayed Betsy in the middle of Lockdown. My only fear is that as Patsy has only just (well 2 months ago) been bonded with Christian and Meg will she go back successfully with them after a night or 2 in the hospital cage?

Of course that's an additional worry isnt it, hopefully if they accepted her so well to begin with they will be happy to see her back after her op... but there are no guarantees are there with these tricky little furry potato characters! Sending many hugs and healing wheeks, its a lot of worry for you but whatever decision you and the vet make will be the right one for Patsy because we all know what a brilliant and experienced piggy mum you are x

Hope all goes well for Patsy.
Can the hospital cage be placed next to Christian and Meg so they can see and smell each other?

She’s in the best possible hands with you.

Good idea but Christian and Meg are in the Penthouse Suite of the Hutch. Unless I keep them in the run for a couple of days and nights and Patsy in the hospital cage ....

Took this photo of Patsy's bits tonight. Do you think it looks a bit swollen, or am I imagining things?

That's what I thought. I'm glad I'm not just imagining it. I'll contact the vet tomorrow.

Right now I am REALLY worried about Patsy. This morning she weighed in at 775g thats 200G LESS THAN SHE WAS WHEN I ADOPTED HER 9 WEEKS AGO. She stinks of urine, has wet fur on her backside and back legs, stretches her back legs right up when she poops indicating she is in pain. I have taken her to the vet several times for weight loss, left a message for the vet on Friday but nobody got back to me. This weight loss is despite extra feeds of oats and/or grated carrots/apple and syringe feeds. Something is going on and the vets just won't listen. I'll be phoning at 9am this morning and INSISTING she is seen TODAY.
