After 14 days of Baytril Peanut Butter went for a check up at the vet's. His lymph nodes have reduced from 2cm x 1.5cm to 1.5 cm x 1cm. So, it does seem like an infection and not a tumour as we were afraid of. But since they are still swollen he is on yet another 14 day course of Baytril.

I don't understand what sort of infection this could be because he never exhibited any symptoms of illness and his temperature has always been normal. The swollen lymph glands were discovered only at his routine dental treatment, at which it was also discovered he had even gained weight for the second month in a row.

During his first 14 days of Baytril he never once stopped eating and his poops are perfectly normal and prodigious as usual. Of course, I have been giving him pro-biotics as well.

Since the needle aspirate sample did not contain enough "architecture" the lab could not determine what was in the lymph nodes.

I am really at a loss as to what this mystery illness could be and whether I should request some other tests. I and the vet are reluctant to put him under GA and take a biopsy sample for the lab. But it does seem like the Baytril is working only slowly. Can anyone recommend a better anti-biotic than Baytril?

I am finding it difficult to deal with anything else until PB is sorted and here we are with yet another 14 days to go!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I hope you manage to get this problem sorted out. Poor Peanut Butter. :rose

i would carry on with the baytril because it is working and then see where you are in another 14 days. i would do this because he seems well in himself, and there has been some improvement. i think the amount of change is good for the amount of time personally, but then i don't know about these things really. i know some infections and swelling can take a while to come down though. ches had bad swelling in his mouth at one time, and i think it took about 5 weeks before he was ok again. x

I would continue with the medication for the time being. Hopefully, our forum medical wizards will post later on.

i have no advice sorry but just wanted to say i hope peanut butter gets better soon and big hugs to you as i understand how stressful poorly piggies are as you just want to make it all ok for them. xx

Thanks! That does make me feel better about how long it was taking. My only other comparison was with his cagemate Hazelnut, whose URI was sorted by only a 5 day course of Baytril.

A piggy I was caring for, who had enlarged lymph nodes, was totally recovered after a week on Zithromax (azithromycin). Do you think your vet would consider it? xx

Oh thank you! Will definitely call the vet on that tomorrow morning as it is after 8pm here now. She is very open to suggestions. The electricity in my neighbourhood is being shut off for some upgrades from 8am to 3pm tomorrow so will not be able to get back on the computer until after that. But will definitely update on how I got on with this suggestion.
