Peanut is poorly!

Hi,

I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice. Peanut is 2yrs old (we think - I've had him 4 months after rescuing him from a dark shed!)

Recently whenever Peanut poops he squeaks (almost a shreik). He doesn't seem to be constipated as he still poops as much as ever. He is eating and drinking as normal.

I've been to the vet 3 times now and have been given Zantac as they thought it may be a motility problem. This sorted him out initially but symptoms came back when meds were stopped. He's back on it again but doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

The vet admitted he'd not come across a guinea pig presenting with these symptoms and still eating and drinking ok.

Has anyone else? Next step is lots of investigations. Any suggetions gratefully recieved.
 
I would have him x-rayed for stones in the bladder or urethra; they can present these symptoms, too. Try to get your vet to do without or with as little anaesthetic as possible.

Hi pipsqueak, I agree that it's worth having him checked for stones, just to be sure. However, my first thought on reading your post was cystitis (urinary tract infections) as these often present with this symptom. It is confusing at first as they can and do suffer pain on pooping when suffering cystitis; sometimes only on passing poops and not when passing urine, so I understand why it's not something the vet has considered.

Plenty of fluids is key and may help ease his problem; anti-inflammatories/pain relief is also important - the squeaking suggests pain, which is often linked with inflammation. The vet may decide to try antibiotics as well (in which case, if he will prescribe Septrin, then that is the antibiotic most suited to UTIs).
 
Many thanks for all your advice. Peanut is with the vet at the moment. He had xrays today and there doesn't appear to be any stones. He's waiting to see the exotics vet tomorrow so hopefully will find some answers to his problems.
