My daughter went out to check on the guinea pigs to find the door of the hutch wide open, the lock on the floor, the water bottle lying on the floor and Peanut missing. We tore our hair out for days searching the garden, leaflet dropping the neighbours, searching the neighbours garden, posting things on local facebook groups, calling local rescue centres and vets.

There has been no sign of him.

This morning we came downstairs to find the door of his hutch now occupied by Willow and Aurora like someone or something had been trying to pull it open but the new lock kept the door shut. There were paw marks on the hutch and the water bottle was on the gound with a hole in it like tooth marks.

I hate to say it, but I am thinking the worst now about poor Peanut. He had only been with us since May, we loved him so much and he wouldn't have been a year old till January. I am so sorry I didn't protect him and make him safer. I hope I am wrong and he turns up somehow and I can see his beautiful face again022.webp IMG_1042.webp and cuddle him.

We love you Peanut.

Poor peanut and you! Is it possible for the other piggies to move indoors, even if their hutch is totally secure it will still be terrifying for them if an animal is trying to get to them.

I am ever so sorry about poor Peanut. Please consider finding another option than an outdoors hutch for your piggies as it must be a very frightening experience for them whether it was a dog, a fox or a cat - and guinea pigs can die of fright!

I am quite saddened to read your post, Clair!

Peanut was a gorgeous pup, and I am sure that he would have grown into a chunky, healthy boar - Quite stunning in appearance!

Poor guineapig. Sorry for your loss. I would move the other guinea pigs indoors incase it happens again. Better safe than sorry

Oh I'm so sorry to read this. He has such an adorable little face.

I agree with other posts. Can you move them indoors even if for a few months? Whatever is after them knows they are there and will probably keep returning to get them and that would be a very terrifying experience for your piggies.

I hope you are able to find Peanut. x x

Omg I'm so sorry sounds like a pesky critter was trying to get them maybe a coyote or raccon.
A few months ago something got into my brothers chicken pen and killed all 10 of his chickens and ducks were thinking it was a weasel or ferret because it had to be something small.
Is there anyway you can move them inside or atleast into your garage?
Poor Peanut, i hope she comes home

I am really sorry, got to be the worst fear of any piggie owner. Massive hugs x

That's really sad and I'm sorry you've experienced that... :(

This happened to my sister in laws rabbits, one also went missing, she bought the other one indoors and put it in her kitchen overnight with a litter tray and then she was to worried so kept it as a house trained rabbit, she lets it on the grass during the day.

Maybe you could bring the hutch indoors for a few weeks or put it in a garage or shed so that whatever it trying to get to them will think they have gone and go somewhere else maybe?

x

really heartbreaking :( praying he has found somewhere safe and you will find him x

So sorry about Peanut! My Aunties/cousins/grandmas baby bunny had died a week ago :( They have bred the bunny since we went to visit them and the other 2 bunnys were sold but that one wasn't. One night a cat or something killed it! The hay rack on the floor, drink bottle broken and the bunny had a heartattack since it was so scared :( Please don't let it happen to your pigs and consider bringing them inside no matter how secure the hutch is

We thought poor Peanut had bashed againts the door and the lock fallen off, that he'd got out and run away. There were no signs of animals the day he went missing so we were blaming the lock on the cage. What I saw yesterday morning has changed my mind. I didn't know animals would get their teeth round the bars and try to pull the door of the hutch open!

It's a shame I can't bring them in but they were completely barricaded up last night with paving slabs, fence panels and wheel barrows and trampolines etc. I felt they were safe, but I still didn't sleep! Especially after my friend came round yesterday and said that her neighbour's son was in the garden (age 5) with the rabbits and the fox came in bold as brass and just took one of the rabbits. I couldn't believe my ears. Damn foxes are getting too sure of themselves! Still my husband has promised to build be a fenced enclosure down the side of the house with a roof, so a kind of shed, but better, so hopefully when that's done I can rest more easily.

image.webp Would this not be an option for night it seems to have ventilation but could also be insulated for winter ?

Grrr those foxes! I'm quiet lucky we don't have them in australia but we do have venomous spiders snakes and bad stuff!
