Peanut's Lump

Are hooman eye drops kept next to wine & chocolate?
Sorry to hear you have hay poke- you shouldn’t keep burrowing in the hay.
Hope it heals quickly
My hooman eye drops are between the wine and the coriander :) I dont quite go for the wine every 4 hours but whenever oollah-woollah hears me open the fridge its definitely coriander time! She is the loudest animal of any species that I ever met :)

He's miserable this morning, he's scratched his eye! Back to the vets at 12 o'clock. He's not eating for himself but he's had 20ml recovery food so far this moring, lots of wee and poops thank goodness, hopefully we will be back on track once he starts some eye drops.
How is he doing? X

Poor boy's not so good today I suspect partly because the anaesthetic has worn off, I remember that 'this doesn't hurt so much' thought just after an op, then being in a lot of pain the next day. His eye is looking a lot better already after two lots of drops, he has them 3 times a day @PigglePuggle . He's not eating for himself probably the Baytril effect, he's also stopped grabbing the syringe like he was yesterday. If he's still like this in the morning I will ring the vets for Ranatidine, wish I knew we were going to be like this this morning, I'd have got some when we went for the eye drops. These vets usually give Ranatidine routinely with the Baytril so I'm not sure what happened this time. I didn't think to ask for it with all the stress. I shall ask if I can up his Metacam (.44 at moment) or give something else as well if no improvement tomorrow.

Have you got any Probiotic like Pro C to give? When mine are in Baytril, I put a pinch in an egg cup full of water and give an hour after the Baytril. Aim for at least 5ml more if he will take it. Velvet has just finished a 5 day course of Baytril for a UTI and loved the Pro C.

Poor little chap, hope he starts eating soon! I also give Pro C when my piggies have baytril. Hope the vet can give you some ranitidine, might be good to get him checked over again anyway if he's gone downhill a bit... is it possible that swelling from his surgery wound is making it difficult for him to swallow? Does his surgery wound site look ok?

He's already having pro c, I always have it in as the vet suggested last year S & P should have it daily. The vet checked his wound yesterday when he saw her about his eye and she said it was looking good, the metacam is helping to keep keep down any swelling. He's got another vet check tomorrow and Tuesday. He's a bit brighter today didn't want his recovery food but took about 10mls with fuss! He's also managed a little grass, a sow thistle leaf and a small bit of cucumber. I caught him in the hay pile just now having a little chew. Not enough to make me really happy with him but it's a start. I'm not quite so worried today as he's a bit fiestier, fiesty is good! His eye is also looking 98% better. We will of course take him back to the vet today if he goes down hill at all.

Glad he's doing better now, don't the little go up and down so fast! Keep eating Peanut x
Yes they do!
The hard thing about this situation is how happy and healthy he was before the op. It had to be done before the abcess caused serious problems but the way he is now feels like my fault, I did this to him. Silly I know but hard to get your head round to thinking the right way!

Don’t blame yourself, you have done the right thing. Not having the operation would have lead to more pain and problems. Once he picks up, you both will feel better. I felt like that when Ted had that disastrous first dental with the local vet but eventually we managed to get his teeth sorted in the end x

Hang in there, keep up with the feeding little Peanut x

Hello everyone,
Thank you all for your good wishes and healing vibes. I am not happy with my slaves they have taken me to a horrible place with funny smells and loud noises that made me hurt. I don't want to eat that horrible muck they keep trying to give me but I am eating grass, only one sort though. I've got the slave running round in circles in the garden trying to find a particular long stem :)). I enjoyed a milk thistle leaf this morning but I decided I don't like those this afternoon. Oh look out the slave is coming back, head down, pancake, look miserable and sleepy, give a little squeak - got to keep these hoomans on their toes.
Love from Peanut.

Yes, that’s right Peanut, put them through it! These slaves have a lot to answer for! We like to do the same when we are off it! Bill and Ted wishing you a quick recovery x

Hi Peanut

My Slave weighs me every morning and gives me my Metacam twice a day. I like to keep her on her toes. Sometimes in the morning I let her pick me up easily and sometimes I like to play a game of "catch me if you can" around the hutch. I like to do that it's fun. Keep on causing havoc.

Lots of wheaks

Christian

Peanut's been for a check up this morning, the good news is that his eye has completely healed and we can stop the drops. The bad news is he's lost 80gms over all, he stopped eating for himself completely yesterday afternoon. He now has ranitidine and if he's not eating for himself by tomorrow he will be readmitted to the hospital. I'm upping his syringe feeds and can be a little more insistant with him as the surgery wound is healing nicely and doesn't look so sore.

Oh dear how frustrating he's not eating when his surgery wound and eye are ok! Hope the ranitidine and syringe feeding get his tummy going again, come on Peanut, you've come through the worst bit, just get munching x

Fingers crossed for little Peanut x Come on fella get munching x have you tried a light tummy massage?

Betsy responded well to light tummy massage when she had bloat. She hated it at first but it got her tummy moving. I did it 3 times a day then one day the gas moved and she did a huge fart (well for piggy) which stunk :vom::vom: and she was fine after that. Hope Peanut responds well to tummy massage.

Yes, that’s what happen to my Ted when he was bloated after that first GA dental, his tummy was so swollen and I knew it was not food! I gently massaged his tummy and he let rip the most terrible smell and loud trump which made me laugh! It did the trick and soon after we got poops!

Peanut doesn't have bloat, he's not been eating enough, despite CC top ups. As soon as I realised he hadn't eaten anything for himself I put him onto 2 hourly syringe feeds. He's put a little bit of weight back on today from yesterday's feeds but it's a real struggle. When I booked him in at the vets I marked on the form that he had a bad reaction to Buprenorphine last time they gave it to him and I had to syringe feed him round the clock for 4 days, he was very lethargic and couldn't hold his head up. I've just looked at the itemised receipt they gave me when I paid for the operation and they gave him Buprenorphine again. Same reaction this time but worse, I thought I was losing him yesterday and we aren't out of the woods yet. I'm gutted that they could do this to him, I guess I was put down as a fussy owner who doesn't know what she's talking about. Poor Peanut.

Oh my word. Good job you are so on the ball. I have everything crossed for him xx

Thank you @VickiA . It's so hard to see him like this, before the op he was as bright as a button and full of grumpy old boar life. Spike and Peanut have both grown into lovely mature boars who are a joy to be around. I'm trying really hard to bring him back to more like his old self by Tuesday and his next check, I really don't want him to go back in there for treatment.

Oh dear this isnt good but to be fair to the vet I don't think there are many alternatives to buprenorphine. Though perhaps they could have given him a lower dose and monitored him more closely after you had raised concerns. And I think there are buprenorphine reversal drugs they can use to bring piggies round from it faster, they did that with Tallullah who has a freaky skinny pig metabolism- she needed 4x the usual dose of meds to knock her out then they couldnt wake her up and she got 4 doses of wake-up drugs, then after that she had a bizarre allergic reaction to her sutures and it all went very scary for a while...
Poor Peanut, and poor you- this was very routine low risk but necessary surgery and its awful when that turns out badly, after what happened with my little hippo girl (you can probably find Tallullah's abscess thread on the forum) I totally understand how awful this must be, but hopefully he will get through it soon! Tallullah sends many smoochy weird skinny pig kisses to Peanut and we are all hoping he starts eating soon! X

Kept the 2-3 hourly feeds up all night and again today. This morning we had a few sticky miss formed poops, about 3pm today we got lots and lots of little poops, very small but lots. I don't want to speak to soon but I've just walked past the cage and he has his head in a pile of hay and it looks like he's munching, fingers crossed he really is eating it. He's also looking brighter and is holding his head up a little bit instead of having his nose firmly planted in the fleece.
