What would be easier on her tum, metacam (dogs one) or calpol?

If the vet will prescribe Metacam or Rimadyl, then go with that. I've not given Calpol to my pigs but have children's Nurofen; I've never had problems with pigs on Nurofen, Delilah's been on it 2x daily for a few weeks now.

We have dogs metacam here already, my only problem is the vet seemed to think I'd be best not giving pain relief and if I do give it I won't know if the infection has cleared. I think I might just leave her just now, obviously if she goes off her food I will give relief!

I do hate hearing her squeak :(!

I would give her the Metacam for the first few days, Disney has just finished a weeks course of Antibiotics for a UTI and the vet gave her a injection of metacam which would last for about 48 hours, the vet said this would see her through the pain until the baytril kicked in.

Hope she feels better soon, its so sad to see them poorly isn't it

Pebbles and her medicine!

I went up to give Pebbles her medicine tonight and she had her head hiding in the tunnel which is very unusual she is normally up at the bars waiting to greet. I think she knew it was medicine time.

I must admit I think I would drink her med's its banana flavour and smells delicious! :)

My Gwenny has given up hiding from me at medicine time, she just lets me lift her up, she knows there's no point in trying to run away. Twice a day, every day. :)) Mind you, she's had it for three months now so I should think she's used to it by now. rolleyes

How is Pebbles this morning?

Hehe i would too, it smells like banana milkshake to me! But i have tried a little that dripped on my finger and its disgusting :)>>> so i dont blame the pigs for not wanting to take it, Gizmo hates it so tell Pebbles she isnt alone. :))

I usually give metacam for the first few days too, to help with the pain and in case there's any inflammation in the bladder, 0.1mls once a day. I wouldn't do this if there was any indication of kidney failure though.

Pebbles!

She never came up for veggies this morning or greeted me 8.... I don't think she approves of the medicine thankfully she was up this evening and did eat this morning veg just didn't want to take it from me.

She keeps running away from me. :(. We've just had medicine and some grass so all forgiven for another day! She is still crying poor baby!

I don't how long it'll take for her to stop crying :(!

It must be hard to be meanie mummy with the medicine. :( It's good she's got an appetite though and I'm sure she'll be back to her normal self once the meds kick in. Did the vet say how soon to expect some improvement?

:)

As there's signs of pain I would give pain relief, it may help eliminate the infection and inflammation quicker to act now rather than later. I do get what the vet says but my personal take on it is that running a standard (1-2 week minimum) course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories then laying off and seeing how she is, is going to be better for the pig than giving the very basic treatment and not tackling both the bacterial and inflammatory aspects of an infection.

Totally agree with Laura. Just out of interest, which vet do you use?

Hope Pebbles is getting some relief by now. Try to get as much fluid into her as you can, it will help to flush out any nasties. Human cystitis medicine, unsweetened cranberry juice and barley water should all help.

My Milly Molly is off to the vet tonight for the same thing. Wish I could get septrin but my vet always prescribes baytril first.

I must say I really do trust my vet I have used Tague, we didn't even ask for Septerin he gave it straight off. I have used him for all my animals but I didn't know he also seen pigs until I spoke to another member who also use him :)!

Just when I was considering pain relief was the forward!

Pebbles has just did a pee and not cried :), I Hope this is a turning point.

sorry i have not been very chatty lately unfortunately got wedding planning nonsense going on so very distracted, but glad that pebbles is getting better, loved the photos of new boy!

Pebbles hates me and I'm merging Wilma and Pebbles thread!

Seems easier since they have the same symptons.

I have sat for over 2 hrs waiting on pigs to wee.. Wilma is 100% crying and more than likely going to the vet Tuesday morning. Although I am going to phone the vet and see if he will just proved Septrin for her providing Pebbles is cleared up. If the vet wants to see her I'll take her.

Pebbles were do I start, She hates me. Doesn't take her medicine well, pretty much takes nothing. Spends her time running away from and trying to suicide jump off the bed. In between this she spent her time not weeing and she even bit me for my efforts in fairness it was a nip and never drew blood which was nice of her Shes normally loves human attention clearly not anymore, I feel terrible and I still don't know if she is crying so all in all not a goodnight :(!

Try not to feel bad Joanne. Connie was the most friendliest guinea pig ever and would take her meds. Eliza on the other hand was a complete pain and hated me too. Try not to worry, Pebbles will get over it and will soon be back to normal xx

Floris always became a bit anti me after 10 days of medication, she'd get much harder to catch and be less and less cooperative about taking it, the little toe rag, she totally knew when it was medicine time! I remember the vet saying, she'll like this, it's banana flavour. But Floris didn't like it at all, and made it quite clear that she hated banana flavour! But don't worry, they forget about the nasty medicines so quickly, and get back to their usual cuddly selves in no time! I sure do hope little Wilma gets better soon too.

Pebbles wee'd again last night without crying :). Nearly finished her med's to so glad she is almost 100%.

Wilma on the other hand its very obvious shes in pain when wee'ing, she was crying last night and after I put her in the cage I heard tiny whimpers coming from her wee house. Poor baby.

She has the vet this morning currently sitting waiting on a wee I hope she wee's soon as we have to leave soon. I seem to be spending alot of time waiting on pigs to wee.

I want to make sure the sample is as fresh as possible so the vet can test it.

She wee'd well I typing go Wilma good girl! xx>>>

Interesting enough there was no squeaks but she was in obvious pain last night. Good job I got a sample. What a Clever girl!

I'm so sorry you and the girls are having such a miserable time with this. Hope the vet visit goes ok for Wilma. I'm sure Pebbles will be back to her laid back and lovingself once she's off meds and feeling comfortable again. I know how ratty I get with a urine infection so must be awful for wee piggies. xx
