At the beginning of January Pebble went to the vets for a dental. As he had lost a lot of weight I noticed he had a small round lump next to where a tail would be. I opted to keep an eye on it as we had a tough few weeks getting over the dental and I didn’t want to add another stress for him (and me!)

It hasn’t grown at all since I first noticed it. Well today at the weekly health check I noticed it was a bit dry. I gave it a gently squeeze and this all came out!

It smelt of cheese. I’m thinking a burst cyst. His cage mate Patrick has a cyst on his back and Pebbles felt the same as that.

I’ll be keeping a daily check on it to see if it fills up again.

Hopefully it’s not an abscess. 🤞🏻

Please stop worrying.

It's definitely a burst sebaceous cyst with the classic textbook cheesy filling. Unfortunately, it is going to refill and may need operative removal at some point; especially if it becomes infected. It is not urgent, though.

PS: If it was an abscess, you would be commenting about the rather overwhelming smell of the watery fluid or pus coming out. ;)

But I am sorry that you are being faced with your next headache.

Looks like a cyst but I’m not a vet obviously but I’ve had one myself and Stan has a small one on his ear. Hopefully that will ease it a little for him x

I’m not really ready to talk about this but Stan is not well and I think I will have to take him to be PTS this week. This also leaves me with Waffles alone and I just can’t see myself getting another pig. Although I am here a lot and would be a good companion to him I know I won’t be enough. I just can’t go through loosing anymore I’m just not strong enough. It’s killing me with Stan and I haven’t even let him go yet and the thought of surrendering Waffles is just as painful. I only got him in August last year after we lost Squirrel. I feel like I’m letting them both down.

I think you are ready to talk about it. Please allow us to support you and help ease your mind. We cannot take away your pain but we can help you make you feel better about yourself and give you the strength to get through it instead of you going to pieces.

We have created it for just that purpose - to help each other through the dark times because as a community we understand and get how you feel from our own experiences.

Helping our owner-members is as important to us as helping their piggies. And by being able to help you, we are also helping you to support your boys to your best. ;)

There may be a practicable solution for Waffles if possible in due time.
 
I have a question.

Should I be expressing the cyst? There must be a hole in it as it’s very easy to “pop”. He’s not bothered by it or me cleaning it.

Just wondering if I should just leave it alone?

Does your vet want to see him again? How does it smell? The stuff has to come out somehow 🫣

I didn’t mention it to the vet as we were going through his dental drama at the time. It smells cheesy so it’s a cyst not an abscess.
