Hi All,
A few weeks ago i noticed that there was orange pee in my guinea pigs enclosure. I monitored it and took her to the vets assuming bladder infection/stones. An xray was done which was clear and i was given bayril and metacam. I am now on the last dregs of these (been administering them for 10 days) and no difference. A key thing to say is that the urine comes out looking completely normal and THEN turns orange after several secands/minutes. Might this suggest the orange ISNT blood? Surely if it was blood the urine would come out coloured? They aren't eating anything red that could be doing it and her cage mate's pee is normal. Any ideas what might be happening? Obviously i will go back to the vets if it continues etc. A couple of days after i started the meds i rushed her to the vets again as she had stopped walking and just lay in a heap. She appeared to be dragging herself by her front legs if highly motivated to move. VERY unnerving but after a couple of days she started walking normally again and is now back to behaving and eating fine.
Thanks

Hello,

Wee turning orange after coming out clear can change to a rusty orange color when it is standing it's something to do with the oxidation of porphyrins in the wee our vet told us this a few years ago

Found this for you - It is briefly mentioned on Guinea lynx http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html down the bottom quoted

Blood in urine:

Urine sometimes changes to an orange color on standing (this may be the oxidation of porphyrins in the urine). When your guinea pig has blood in its urine, it will appear red or pinkish (if diluted). Blood dries a brownish color

You would need to get the wee tested at the vets with a dipstick test or get a kit at home to trst for the prescence of blood, as blood is not always visible to the eye. We use these kits

As regards to dragging her legs, that does sound very odd. She is ok now?

Could be bladder sludge. If so change pellets to Cavy Cuisine avoid feeding too much high calcium veggies like spinach, broccoli etc, avoid alfla hay or lecine (spelling) as that is alfla hidden in food. Medicine required is potassium citrate. I had a pig that used to pass blood in wee and wheek while peeing, I spent a fortune finding out what it was seeing 2 vets, 2nd vet found what it was and sorted it. She was fine and lived a long happy life.

Also food can colour pee.

thank you both for your replies! As i type this i have her (Freckle) on a plastic bag in my lap waiting for her to pee so i can do a urine analysis. Hopefully that will give some info!

I took her to the vets as soon as she stopped walking and an xray was done which showed no stones. 2 days later she started walking normally again. Possibly it was a result of the baytril i was giving her assuming bladder infection? Could have been unrelated but is now magically ok.Today i took in a urine sample which was tested. It contained no blood which is great. The vet spun it in a centrifuge thingy but hasn't analysed the results yet. i should be thrilled about no blood but it just adds to the mystery. She is almost 5, never had pee turn orange before and it is such a colour that the stains on towels and sheets dont wash out! confused.com!
