My Guinea pig peed blood yesterday morning and hasn’t since then. He has an X-ray scheduled next week to rule out possible stones. Any ideas in the meantime?

Was it pure blood and not porphyrines?

If it’s an infection (so possibly porphyrine rather than blood) rather than stones :
At the start of an infection, symptoms can be inconsistent but firm up over a few days. Seemingly clear urine can also contain blood.
If it is stones and it was actual blood: then the x ray is needed to confirm. If you notice any trouble peeing, any pain then see your vet as an emergency in case the urethra is suffering a blockage.

Otherwise all you can do is wait out the time until the x ray and ensure you carry out daily emergency care ie daily weight checks and any necessary syringe feeding.

I hope your piggy is ok

I used hydrogen peroxide to confirm that it was in fact blood. On the 16 - he was peeing pink and the vet said it was porphyrin. But yesterday he peed blood and thankfully hasn’t since then. Hoping it’s not stone but an infection that can be taken care of.

Did the vet start any antibiotics on the 16th to treat a possible infection?
Was there any more pink between 16th and the blood yesterday?
Have any painkillers been prescribed?

No - the vet didn’t prescribe anything on the 16th (even though I did ask if he should be on antibiotics) bc essentially they said it was dye and that boy Guinea pigs rarely get UTIs.

No pink between 16th and the 28th.

So when he peed blood on the 28th, I called and asked for antibiotics and they also wanted to do X-rays. No painkillers are prescribed, just Cipro.

Luckily at day 3 and he hasn’t peed blood.

Male guinea pigs do indeed get UTIs but rather sterile cystitis has become more common than a bacterial UTI (for indoor piggies, male or female).

Porphyrine is indeed a natural dye indicative of the start of a urinary issue - whether it be bacterial or sterile.

All you can do is wait for the x ray really, monitor for any signs of discomfort and carry out daily weight checks.

I hope he is ok
