Is it possible to go pellet free? In Japan we have a very limited range of guinea pig pellets and most of them have questionable ingredients. I was planning on feeding organic meadow hay and organic rye grass (smaller amounts of rye grass as it is REALLY expensive here) then grow my own herbs/forage/fresh grass for them. I’d like that to be the bulk of their diet, with the herbs/forage and fresh grass making up the majority of the vegetable portion of their diet. I’d then give a very small amount of vegetables, probably red or green pepper as well each day.
The only thing i’d be concerned about is the vitamin D and vit C. I supplement my own family’s diet with vitamin D, so wondering if I could do that for the piggies too. Does anyone have the daily or weekly dose requirements for them. Could I do similar with vit C? I could syringe dropper.
the other alternative I found was oxbow organic pellets for guinea pigs (the other varieties seem to have some sugar) but here in Japan they seem to be discontinuing supply of the guinea pig pellets. They do supply the rabbit ones and when I have compared they have the EXACT same ingredients in the same order (including vit C) as the guinea pig pellets. Do you think this would be okay?
My first preference would be of course pellet free as I believe closer to natural is better but I wouldn’t want to risk their health.
