Dilly's Piggies
Teenage Guinea Pig
My 2nd herd of piggies have never been big hay eaters for some reason, their poops are much smaller than my other herd, they're more of a ball/oval shape than long. A few pigs have been on antibiotics for other reasons and with this I was giving probiotics, I noticed an enormous increase in hay consumption and of course their poops were much larger and normal looking.
So I looked into buying pelleted probiotics to feed on a daily basis as fibreplex was quite pricey, I am feeding the protexin pro-fibre for small animals and it's fabulous, the exact same results as fibreplex and I'm super happy with the product, it stimulates appetite so they eat more hay, doubles the size of their poops and is just generally beneficial to them. I've also started giving oxbow digestive support and that is helping get more fibre into them but the pro-fibre is the main helper.
However I ran out of pro-fibre yesterday and straight away today they are back to small poops and not eating as much hay, is there a medical reason for this or is it just the way they are?
Pro-fibre is also quite expensive so I'm looking into Burgess excel dual care which is a similar product and much cheaper, but it only contains prebiotics and not probiotics too, would this still be good for them?
