My 2nd herd of piggies have never been big hay eaters for some reason, their poops are much smaller than my other herd, they're more of a ball/oval shape than long. A few pigs have been on antibiotics for other reasons and with this I was giving probiotics, I noticed an enormous increase in hay consumption and of course their poops were much larger and normal looking.

So I looked into buying pelleted probiotics to feed on a daily basis as fibreplex was quite pricey, I am feeding the protexin pro-fibre for small animals and it's fabulous, the exact same results as fibreplex and I'm super happy with the product, it stimulates appetite so they eat more hay, doubles the size of their poops and is just generally beneficial to them. I've also started giving oxbow digestive support and that is helping get more fibre into them but the pro-fibre is the main helper.

However I ran out of pro-fibre yesterday and straight away today they are back to small poops and not eating as much hay, is there a medical reason for this or is it just the way they are?

Pro-fibre is also quite expensive so I'm looking into Burgess excel dual care which is a similar product and much cheaper, but it only contains prebiotics and not probiotics too, would this still be good for them?

Sorry I do not have personal experience of these feeds but it is very interesting what a difference they have made to your piggies' hay consumption. I would imagine the one containing both pre and probiotics would be the best

Yeah I didn't expect this either, I just saw the good response from fibreplex whilst being on antibiotics and I thought hey, why not try pelleted probiotics to feed long term, and it has made a huge difference to them. Protexin pro-fibre is marketed for rabbits but I've had great results with my piggies too, I thought this might help someone in a similar position. :)

I agree, it could be very helpful. I wonder if @Wiebke has information about it?

Thank you! We get members with piggies with long term digestive problems regularly, so it may be an extra option for them to consider trying.

I've written a more in depth post about my experience with pro-fibre in the 'guinea pig chat' section, it's called "should we be feeding probiotics daily?", I wanted to tag you in it to give you more information but I'm not sure how to tag on here, apologies!

You tag somebody by typing @ immediately followed by the username. A list will appear. Click on the name you want; it will turn green and generate an alert notification when you click on post.

I would be grateful if you started a thread like that in the Care section rather than the chat section which is really just meant for chatting and not for information. Ideally in health/illness, so any discussion is more likely to get more expert input that way as it is basically a health question and not chat issue. ;)

I simply cannot monitor the whole forum on the chance that somebody is posting in the wrong place, or I'd be swamped by 30 new alerts in the time I have answered 3 issues in depth... and the risk of missing vital threads is much greater. :(

Oh right okay, it was more of an article blog type post rather than asking questions so I wasn't sure where to put it, but now I know! Perhaps I can re-post in the right section? As long as admins like yourself are aware of my experience and can use the information to help others that's job done for me!
