Hi everyone!

What would you recommend as being the best pellet for piggies on a budget? As I've got a family of 8 Guineas I'd need a pretty big bag (usually have 10kg). I've been looking at the jr farm more C?

Thanks all.

Personally I would probably avoid those pellets - the first ingredient is wheat, so although they seem quite a good price, you are paying for pellets bulked out with something our piggies shouldn't be eating.
I know price is important with lots of piggy mouths to feed, but you also need to feed less of a high quality pellet, so that is one saving, versus cheaper foods where you piggies will eat a lot more to get the same level of nutrients.
Another possible issue with the JR Farm more C is that it has quite high calcium levels. If you piggies eat too many pellets and have problems with bladder stones it will end up costing you a lot more in the long run, than feeding a better quality pellet from the start.
You can make pellets go further by foraging for things like fresh grass as often as possible - over the Summer my piggies have eaten very few pellets because of all the grass they get (although that will change soon!).
I bulk buy Versele Laga Cavia Complete and split it with another local guinea pig owner. Mine eat very few pellets so I don't need a huge sack, but by splitting the sack with a neighbour we get a better price per kg.

There is a good chart here comparing different pellets:

I also "use" Versele Laga Complete and I also avoid cereals for piggies; and I also feed them with only very few pieces of that (good) pellet. I have stored part of the pellet in the freezer because with a bag I will go on for one year and more!
Versele Laga has a good price, but remember that the recommended max dose (recommended by the vets, not the firms) is few grams only.
Also my piggies eat huge amount of fresh grass which is their main food ( and it is free) and has very good nutritional qualities. The vet is very satisfied of how they are growing up (and poo and wee are very good with no calcium residuals and no smell)

You need pellets for your pig’s diet. They are healthy if fed in the right amounts and full of vitamin C which is needed for Guinea Pigs. I recommend you get pellets with no dry veggies in them as plain pellets are healthier. Remember to follow the instructions (they should be on the bag) for feeding the pellets. Never give them an unlimited supply. Sorry, but I can’t recommend an inexpensive brand because the brands I’ve tried are not inexpensive.

Hi I feed science selective pellets which you can find in 10kg bags online. I shop around as price varies so much but my last bag was cheapest through Amazon. I have found this to be the best quality pellet for mine at an affordable price.

Sorry just noticed that this thread is 6 weeks old so you're probably sorted by now
