Hi, we adopted our 1yr old piggies yesterday and all they seem to eat is hay and fresh food that I gave them over the course of the day. They don't seem to have touched the pellets at all. Is this normal please. I have bought science selective pellets and also nature's choice which contains lots of hay, flowers, nettles and a few small pellets. They have eaten some of the nature's choice leaves but that is all. Thanks in advance.

I am sure they will settle down. To be honest, a guinea pig's diet should be 80% hay anyway. The other important nutrient is Vitamin C so, as long as they are eating hay and veg with Vit C , they are probably getting all they need.

I expect they will start eating some pellets too in the next few days,

Well three weeks in and still Bob and Barry are not really touching their nuggets. I've tried switching to Burgess excel with mint but they still are not interested. Should I be worried? They are eating plenty of hay and veggies.

If they are eating hay and veggies -I wouldn't worry unless they are losing weight.

However, It may be worth considering another rand of pellet

Some piggies can be very picky. Keep trying different brands, but please don't worry as pellets are the least important part of a piggy's diet. Some people don't feed pellets to their piggies at all and they're perfectly healthy, although if you do decide to stop feeding pellets, some research on a pellet-free diet would be necessary just to make sure they aren't missing out on any necessary nutrients. :tu:

Remember, don't feed muesli-type mixes, these are bad for their health.

It is normal for your piggies not to eat the pellets the first few days you get them and anyway hay is better for them. Don't worry too much unless they are looking very skinny. I use a mix of burgess excel pellets with mint, science selective pellets and pets at home piggy pellets as my piggys enjoy the variety. How much veg and fresh food do you give them?

When we adopted them, I have a feeling that tthey were being fed the muesli type food so this could be where the problem lies. I have now tried them on Science selective and we are currently on Burgess excel with mint. Can't believe how picky they are.

I usually give them a couple of pieces of veg in the morning and then my daughter feeds them a selection of chopped veg at floor time (a cupful).

I don't think you are giving them too much veg and they prefer that so proberably :
  1. They prefer their previous food so refusing to eat the new food
  2. They are still nervous
I would wait and see.
