Can I ask a few basic questions having read the guidance on feeding pellets again. We have switched to science selective grain free pellets (No alfalfa) and because we have a 5mth old (joined us in Jan) and 2 6mth olds and a 2yr old; one of questions is, do younger piggies (up to 6mths) need alfalfa based pellets? The guidance for under 6mths is circa 40g a day and for piggies from 12mths onwards 10g. So from 6mths onwards piggies should be weaned down to 10g a day? Or a table spoon? We have separate bowls for all 4 piggies and I tend to split allowance into 2 feeds. (No stealing). Just want to make sure my youngsters are getting enough for growth? I may have misunderstood the guidance - still not sure what we do between 6mths and 12mths. Sorry if I’m being dense. 😐

I never fed my pigs alfalfa when young, maybe once but thats it. I dont think it is important, some might have different opinions. My pigs are healthy 👍

I agree with everyone. I feed mine oxbow and have for a really long time. I think it's one of the best brands :)

Mine are on great and small nuggets at present as thats what the pet shop had them on in the pet shop had m on
They will be having Harringtons after the great and small nuggets are finnished

When we had a three week old who is now five-year-old we just fed her Harringtons pellets so nothing special, I think the pellets you are using will be fine

To much alfalfa is bad for them anyway so don’t worry too much about alfalfa If your not feeding it

My piggies have always had science selective grain free pellets, even the youngest ones we got aged 10 or 11 weeks old. I was offered some weird specialist high calorie pellet when we got our baby skinny pig but I just feed her the same stuff as the others plus some porridge oats...
I think its easy to over think things and worry about nutrition, but in the wild they would be eating mostly dry grass is the way I see it- other people may see things differently though!

Rosewood naturals do a pellit called Meadow menu Which consists of different grasses
U can get it on amazon
Its a really good food
U can get 9 kg for a really good price

Thank you piggiepurple. I’m a relative newby and we lost a dear piggie towards the end of last year so I am a bit neurotic now. We now have 4 boars different ages and understand that alfalfa is not good for piggies but I just wondered. Most brands seem to contain it except oxbow (mine weren’t keen) . Why do manufacturers add it? Bulking agent?
