How do people feel about these? I’ve been doing research on them but I don’t know how reliable those sources are. I have definitely heard some bad things about Kaytee.
You just need to check the ingredients in them.
In these cases they are both based in alfalfa and contain wheat products so, you don’t want to feed either of them. Alfalfa isn’t suitable for guinea pigs.
You can, however, give the other version of the selective pellets which are grain free and Timothy hay based. They come in a light purple bag and specifically say they are grain free on the packaging
This is our nugget comparison chart. If you go to the end of the thread then you will find the most up to date version of the chart
I feed mine the grain free version of the above right:
[HEADING=2]Selective Naturals Grain Free Guinea Pig Food[/HEADING]
Not the healthiest by any means, but at least it’s free of grains and it’s the only one the fussy madams will eat!
I do not know about the kaytee brand. The selective brand both grainless and not grainless has 0.6 of calcium in both products.
The grainless selective is good due to no grain in the product.I use 10 kgs bag of normal selective due to having a number of piggies.
The recommended amount of pellets from any brand is one tablespoon per piggie.
...I would not worry too much as its such a small part of there diet.
Good luck with your piggies.
I have used the science selective grain free for many years and I now use the piggie parcels urinary and joint support pellets with glucasamine ( made by a forum member)
I use 1/2 tablespoon of each mixed together
