Hi,

I was just wondering, I have a3 month old guinea pig (almost 4). She is eating her hay, her veggies and in her guinea pig mix she has seeds, what looks like raw barely and pellets. She seems to be a little bit off her pellets. But she is biting into everything else, so I dont think its her teeth, as she seems perfectly happy.

I read on a guinea pig care website that you could heat up their pellets and mash it, and give it to them, I tried this and she really liked it. I'm thinking now that maybe she is being lazy and I dont want to give her soft pellets again, I would rather her eat them hard, for the health of her teeth.

Any suggestions/ comments.
 
We had a 12wk old piggy a month ago and because our older girls have Burgess nuggets I was worried they may be too big and hard for her to eat.
She lived alone in quarentine for a week so I softened them with warm water because she needed to put weight on and she ate them. Once she was put in with my other girls I didn't want to soften all their nuggets but she soon started munching them.

It could be a bit if laziness so as long as her teeth look okay there's no reason why she can't eat hard pellets. Have you thought about trying nuggets instead-they look much tastier plus the little seeds arent that good for them.
 
Have you tried burgess black current & oregano pellets? They are smaller pellets, and smell lovely my boys love them.

Try that? It avoids selective feeding too...
 
I'm in Australia, Ive heard that seeds arent good, but I went to a pet supplier, and the food I got was really good quality, and was confused when it had seeds.

Should i get rid of what she has and buy her new ones, or finish what shes got?

The nuggets and pellets you were both speaking of, do you think they would have it in australia.

Sorry for all the questions:) just want to do the right thing by her. Guinea pigs may be little, but their high maintenance :) well worth it though.
 
Errrrm I'm not sure how to search for australia I just tried but it came up with all english stuff.

Search from your end? Burgess Excel Guinea Pig Blackcurrant Oregano - it should come up with any websites or stores that sell it?

I personally would prefer to feed a pellet based food rather than seeds etc, so if there is an australian equivalent I would buy that. I'm sure you would be able to get the burgess over there, its pretty cheap really too...
 
I'm sure the seeds aren't going to do her immediate harm while you find a good quality pellet food, but I'd get her off them ASAP.

Quick Google and the best pellet-type food I can find recommended in Australia is Oxbow. Mine are on Harringtons in the UK and this is a very small, fairly soft pellet -- pictures of the Oxbow lead me to believe it's quite similar, so your little one may like that.

I'm in Australia too. Most piggie food here tends to be the muesli mix like what you are describing. Woolies, Coles and Big W tend to carry Peter's pellets but these are usually lucerne so not good after piggie is past 6 months of age. Some pet shops do sell Oxbow timothy pellets or you can check this site for info on where to get Oxbow pellets in your part of OZ.
