Sorry, rant alert :(

I've only JUST started to calm down almost a week later.

Saw an ad on gumtree of all places for 2 male guinea pigs FREE! comes with cage blah blah blah.
I'd had a facebook message from a local woman the night before asking if I had any guinea pigs available as her rabbits recently died and her and her child were gutted so they wanted to try piggies etc but didn't want to buy them from PAH as so many in rescue.
Great I say, but technically I'm not a rescue. I have room to take them in if someone is desperate then find a good home for them for a forever home - I'm quite picky and won't rehome them unless completely satisfied they're going to be well looked after.
So anyway I say to her, I'll keep my eyes peeled and enquire with the rescue centres that I know of for you if you'd like :)
All good n well, I see the gumtree ad and ask if shes interested. Brill she says so I message the guy, who couldn't get me there quick enough to pick them up.
I go with my friend and our faces probably said it all to the man.
They were in a cage suitable for a HAMSTER, one was chattering its teeth and clicking them so loud I didn't even wait for an invitation, I reached in the cage and whipped the poor guy out.
The other, a BEAUTIFUL 7 month old peruvian boar, stank. To be frank, was stinking.

So we get out of there asap and head along the motorway to go home with the windows open - no lie - they were reeking :(

Get them home, the abby was ok but really skinny. The peruvian was a state. Poo, straw, hay, bits of paper, food, all matted into the back of his fur. The top part of his fur was covering it so never seen it properly until I sat down with him for a good look.
His fur - was orange with urine as if he had sat in it for life. I took him to vet as his eye was swollen and weeping and crusty. She suspected an ulcer but further checks showed bad case of conjunctivitis. His teeth - vet suspects the owner had attempted to clip or file them?! They are so damaged there is no enamel left on them and they are all chipped :(
His weight she said was 200+ grams under what it should be and he badly needs feeding up.
I had bathed him and shampooed twice and combed as much as possible but he had to have a good bit of fur shaved off the matting was that bad.

I'm sorry for the rant, but I genuinely cannot understand WHY people get these pets when they cant be bothered looking after them! The owner claimed to brush his hair daily and regularly trim it but that was obviously bull.

Because I had to let the lady down and keep the boys myself for now, I went with plan B and travelled to pick up some babies - what a mistake THAT was too :O Being led to believe the babies were an accident I went for some for the lady who was looking... Second owner made it clear she was keeping father and a son in with mother so she can become pregnant as quickly as possible for more babies. So no mistake or accident there! They were all in an outdoor hutch in her daughters bedroom which without sounding OTT , was the saddest thing I've ever seen. A bedroom that was so dire and dirty I'm thinking "should I have called social services?"

I just have heard horror stories but never experienced them in person. Now I'm left wondering do I really want to put myself through these situations? I'm feeling really disheartened and sad and not sure I'm mentally strong enough to pick up the pieces of other peoples ignorance and mistakes.
Does anyone here foster for RSPCA/SSPCA? I'm wondering if that is the way to go instead to help these little animals.

Here are some pictures of what Dougal looked like as soon as I got him home :(
That is not normal is it?10520814_10152450134732762_5174307491838264183_n.webp 10521758_10152450215712762_4231039957414631043_n.webp 10521758_10152450215717762_5157883275645249826_n.webp 1908070_10152459463992762_2171399135327942109_n.webp

I know exactly where you are coming from. I also do a little bit of rescue work too and some that i have too in have been in a terrible state. It is appalling the way people treat not just guineas but all animals. It is really hard work mentally draining and expensive.
The way to look at it if you enjoy and have the funds,is to remember how rewarding it is to turn their life around and give them the best :)

Really, in the 21st century no one should be allowed to keep animals without some sort of licence to say they're capable & these should be renewed every 3 years? Maybe these licences could be obtained from the RSPCA or suitable rescues. Oh! after typing that, I just realised that this is the real world so I'll just have to dream about a perfect world for animals!

That is really sad :( poor babies. Glad you could take them. Lemme guess, the cage was one of the pets at home 80x40 that they claim is fine for a guinea pig? It makes me so mad. 80x40 is the minimum reccomended for a hamster, not a guinea pig, big difference! looking forward to hearing how the boys get on and seeing them healthy.

How anyone can neglect any animal is beyond me, there is just no excuse for it! It makes me mad too, so rant away! At least these two babies are in safe hands now x

Oh my lord the poor lads! I would have gone mad! At least they have fallen into the right hands now!

Poor boys, so glad they are safe now, My Buzz and Woody were in a similar state when they arrived too and that was also Gumtree. Did the vet say anything about a dental needing to be done? I am tagging @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary

Those poor babies too, I hate to think how many times those poor sows will be bred from.

She said that because he is so underweight, I need to try feed him lots of pellets and hay etc. She said he doesn't seem in too much pain but to keep an eye on what he is eating. If he can't manage the pellets to soften them with boiling water. So far I have seen him eat a little pellet but he doesn't eat much. Even in the garden he just sits and hides :/ Hes preferring softer foods.
So she said if he can't manage then the other option would be to remove him and syringe feed until they grow back but that comes with a lot of expense and work. I can't really afford a lot of expense as he wasn't meant to be living with me - BUT - if it means i have to fundraise and raid the penny jars then so be it. I want to make him better whatever it takes x

Yes :) I have syringe fed one of my piggies before who stopped eating when unwell. It was quite tricky but we got there. I'm going to clean out all his house again today and put in just softened nuggets along with a hayball and see how he is after an hour of having that beside him x

@LB14 Syringe feeding him would not be expensive just time consuming. If he prefers soft foods that could be because the harder foods he just can't manage or his mouth is too sore.

I took in Autumn who had terrible teeth and after seeing my vet and 1 week later she was no better i arranged with Debbie from teas to have there for specialist treatment. Fortunatley i was in a position financially to pay for her treatment but she has had to stay at the sanctuary as she will need regular treatment.

I am also lucky that in respect of the rescue piggies i have taken in, i have the back up of North East Guinea Pig rescue to help me rehome them all.

Did the vet put him on any pain relief? if not there may also be an element of pain that is stopping him wanting to eat much.

How is the other little one doing?

No the vet didn't give pain relief as she said he didn't seem in much pain when she was prodding around his mouth lol . He's due back tomorrow to see how his eye drops are working.
I don't mind syringe feeding him if it comes to it. Another thing the vet suggested was he may just never have been given pellets before so doesnt know what they are. As in he's clearly not been fed right going by his weight so god knows what he was eating. There was a few bits of lettuce and some bread in the cage when we picked him up.

The other boy is ok, quite underweight aswell but eating which is good. He goes on like he's never been fed when I go near the hutches with food! So I have no real worries with him and I'm sure he'll get on well wherever he ends up :)

I'm actually a follower of yours on Facebook already and the work you guys do is amazing. I'll send you a message over there

Omg i think I saw you posted this in a fb group I follow :( I hope you reported that guy to the RSPCA! x

This makes me feel sick but thank you for rescuing them x

Piggylicious? I'm going to contact my local SSPCA Branch today about something different but will be reporting it too

I am lost for words reading this, shocking and heartbreaking is all I can say :( so glad you have rescued these fellas. P.s rant away x

That is appalling. WTF is wrong with people?! Maybe that lady should sit in her own pee for about a month and see how much she likes it! Sorry, but I think she needs to be reported, among other things...

haha yes he does! he's so cute :D My neighbour was like "oooooh he looks like Dougal from the magic roundabout!". I'm a bit useless with imaginative names (took me days to come up with "GUS") so I instantly called him Dougal lol

I nearly cried when I read your post. Please report these people when you ring the RSPCA/SSPCA.
It's so disgusting and completely beyond me how anyone can be so brain-dead/indifferent/evil.

So glad they are starting a new chapter with you now. He's a very handsome boar!

I have tears in my eyes reading this. You are wonderful to have helped these poor little ones. What scum that person is to keep breeding. Poor poor piggies.
