People that think guinea pigs are irrelevant pets.

The worst thing I experienced was the attitude I got from the staff at the vets. The vets themselves are cavy savvy and the practice is used by the local rescue, but the difference from the vet nurses and reception staff between me going in with my cats to taking the piggies in is astounding. I felt like the piggies were not seen to be as important to them as "proper pets"
My piggies are more of a companion animal than one of my cats who is basically my lodger and doesn't come near me! If I get a piggy out I'm always guaranteed a snuggle.
My grandparents never understood why I had them but they piggy-sat last summer and I think they won them over. :D:D

They certainly are, even though he won't admit it, Tom and Mini have even won hubby over!

I have always owned guinea pigs throughout my life, right now I have 10, and with having so many it means frequent visits to the vet. My uncle is the one who drives me and I pay him to do so. Every single time he drives me there, he makes snarky comments about my piggies and says "Why are you even spending money at the vet for this, just put it down and be done with it."

It's sad that my own family think this way about my guinea pigs, I love them to death and every animal you choose to have as a pet is worth more than any amount of money. Whether it's a hamster or a horse, we love them all the same and when they get sick, as their owners it is our duty to get them to a vet! I am just sick of people like this, I am always getting comments from people about why I have guinea pigs, why don't I get a 'real' pet like a dog. If I said to my uncle that his dog is a stupid pet and whenever it got sick just tell him to euthanize it, he would tear me apart!

Sorry about the rage, I just really needed to vent this somewhere and I'm sure many of you have had similar comments about guinea pigs, it hurts to hear such things about my darlings.
I agree with you and know what you mean my brother calls my guinea pig a ground hog

My uncle jokes about eating my guinea pig

I've gotten that too, from a friend who is Ecuadoran and knows people who actually do eat guinea pig. But she has also seen pictures of my boys from Facebook and said that they really are stinkin' cute.
I can’t believe people can relate to that joke I thought if I posted it people would just think I am weird

I get these comments too even from other so called "animal lover" friends. I had a friend stay over last week and I forgot to get all of their required veggies prior to his visit so had to take a detour to the supermarket to get them. I had to walk around the veg section several times to find everything and I remember him saying "it's cute just how much you care about them" like it's unusual I care this much. Uhm no they need this veg to be in tip top health. Or maybe it's because I spent a few minutes picking out the best looking carrots for them instead of grabbing the first couple I see.

I think they're more funny and playful than a lot of other animals. I've rode horses for as long as I've had guinea pigs, and nothing can quite match the strange quirky behaviours of pigs. I wish more people would appreciate them rather than seeing them as simple children's pet that they get for a year to demonstrate they have the maturity to look after a dog or a cat.

Stupid people out there on youtube don't care about guinea pigs

I think that people are ridiculous, to put it simply. If you feel that strongly about guinea pigs, don’t keep them as pets. You shouldn’t force your opinion on people.

They are “real” pets, I’ve got quite a few other pets, and I love them all equally, it’s not hard!

So it's all about cost is it? Why is a £20 pet any less loving comforting or deserving than a £200 pound cat or dog? In many cases cats aren't really pets anyway as they are simply kicked out of the house to cause mayhem on other people's property and savage birds and pets. If dogs were £20 would they be similarly undeserving?

I'm sorry, but I dont have time to waste on people who think everything has a monetary value, perhaps you should have the financial debate the next time one of these 'grown ups' is ill after all they came for free
Sorry to rate but this pushed my buttons!
Yes i believe guinea pigs are just nicer, friendlier creatures than cats, as every cat ive met has never been bothered to see me, wheras most guinea pigs always greet me with a squeak and will happily sit there for a cuddle even if i have no food

I'm struggling with the image of a Orangutan in Borneo pushing a digger away from his tree area (breaks my heart) to the fact over 900 million yes Nine Hundred Million for Notre Dame which prob has insurance.

I can understand not spending more than a car is worth on fixing it. But with pets its not the same. Let dog owners answer this, if you rescue a dog and you donated lets say £100, does that mean you wont spend over £100 in its life time to fix any illnesses? Some people are very thick, petty them and laugh.

A life's value is not monetary. Some people don't seem to understand that concept sadly, the outer package or their initial cost is irrelevant. My 2 current most expensive piggies in terms of vets bills were given to me for free.. that doesn't mean they're worth any less than any dog, cat or person (to me anyway...I'd take my pigs over even most family members :xd:)

It just shows that they’re no actually animal lovers. It always surprises me how many people have animals that aren’t animal lovers at all. That includes dogs and cats etc.

I’m quite lucky as my pigs have won a lot of people over quite easily! I don’t drive so get taxis and friends to give lifts to vets and such and one of the taxi drivers who apparently isn’t an animal lover is rather enamoured with them now! When I see him his first question is “how are the guinea pigs?” not how are you or anything... :)) When he first took us he was peering into the carrier with child like awe at which ever pig it was we had and he’s about 50 odd, so it was really nice to see people becoming more aware of what wonderful little creatures they are!

I really don't care what other people think! Lots of people don't get it and that's fine! I don't need to justify myself to anyone. I have met some amazing people through guinea pigs and I have saved the lives of many piggies too! I enjoy what I do, have an amazing vet, who plays a huge part in what we do at TEAS and I am very proud of what our charity has achieved!
