Pepe hasn’t been eating properly since he’s had antibiotic treatment for bacteria found a few weeks ago. Since then, he seems to be looking somewhat scruffy, which suggests to me he has reduced his grooming.

As suggested by CCT we have given him treatments of Carprofen (5mg) for 2 days, (last Fri and Sat) for any gut pain that may be stopping him eating, along with Critical Care and a pro-biotic called Vetrumex (which took hours to track down!) He has since gained a bit of weight and seems to be drinking loads, so we eased him off the Critical Care and stopped the painkillers as advised when his appetite picked up). His weight is hardly soaring but he’s more stabilised. In desperation, we gave him some Tesco Museli (he’s been on Cavy Cuisine and Wagg Crunch) and he dived into this. He seems to be eating again by himself and now eats his wet food which he was never that fussed on before. Can they get bored of their same old food perhaps?

The things that are worrying me now are his lack of grooming as I read somewhere this can be a sign of something but I can’t remember what!), and secondly I noticed that the bit of vetbed under his water bottle seems to be gungy and green like chewed up food has been dribbled, but it is only present directly under the bottle. This has happened in the last day. Pepe has a weird way of pushing the whole water bottle spout in his mouth when he drinks, so frequently the water looks like it has backwash in it, so needs to be changed much more frequently than normal, but it’s almost like he’s been dribbling after he drinks with food particles in his mouth. Either that or he’s been chewing the vetbed. He had a thorough examination in Cambridge two weeks ago, and no tooth problems were reported. But the gunk appearing under the water bottle has really worried me.

I think I will probably end up taking him back up to Cambridge as I’m constantly worrying about him, but wondered if anyone had any experience of the above?

Thanks

Oh Pepe :( still having problems that's not fair :'( >:(
When they've been ill they tend to look scruffy, i found that grooming still happened but i'd best describe it like when you (human) get sick your hair looks dull and unkempt it's cause your system is all wrong, this is what i think happens to our piggies. But if he's not grooming i really don't know :-\ and sorry but i have never had a piggie drink from a bottle or a bowl :o :-\ so don't know what it could be. Does he dribble when he eats? if so it will probably mean that it's still a toofie problem lurking around >:( it can happen sooo quickly :(

Good luck love, we'll be keeping him in our thoughts and saying piggie prayers and sending him heaps and heaps of healing wheeks :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

does the gunk under the water bottle look like poo? My 2 boars poo under the water bottle and then the water makes it go runny sorry bit yukki lol I hope he will be ok keep us updated!

Hi both, thanks for the replies - there is no dribbling with food, that was the first thing we thought of (teeth probs), the gunk is literally just directly under the bottle and its green - I would think it is probably where he has eaten his hay or wet food and still has it all mushed in his teeth, then drinks and is dribbling when he drinks, but he's never done it in the 7 months we have had him, so I really don't know why it's happening now, which made me worry!

Glynis, I wondered if his coat had lost condtion because he has been under the weather, as you say, like we do. Poor little chap he was such a chunky, happy pig and now he's withdrawn and just looks haggard. We're at our wits end with him :-\

Aw Julie, poor little Pepe. You must be worried sick. I have no idea what the green gunk could be, unless it is critical care as Lucky used to get that on his chin, but you say you are not giving that to him at the mo..

Poor little fella, is he moving about as usual or is he sleepy?
I hope he perks up.

Katie x

Hi Katie, saw your email today, but have to reply tonight as it's on my home PC :)

Nah, he seems perkier than he has. He was so down last week, he went to snuggle up to Dylan at lap time (usually keep them apart), and Dylan usually snaps at him if he starts rumbling, but Pepe just stuck his head gently under Dylan's chin and they both snuggled up, bless their hearts. Dylan must have known Pepe was under the weather. Back to normal now though! ::)

He still has the odd rumble at Dylan through the seperator, and I even saw a couple of tiny popcorns last night, but the coat and dribbling has me worried.

Hi, sorry to hear pepe is still not himself, though it does sound like he's improved a lot :) i don't know if this has any relevance but when Bee was on antibiotics, i'd give her the baytril and any that she dribbled would be green because she's constantly eating! Also, she does chew vetbed sometimes and sometimes it does turn green, especially if she's eaten grass before hand. Never had this problem with Bumble. so really it could be that pepe is chewing the vetbed or he may have just had too much water in his mouth and some dribbled out? I woldn't worry too much, it does sound like he's on the mend :) xxxxx

i do think we worry too much sometimes! If i start gettin worried i just say 'what are they doing differently?' and 'are they behaving as if they're ill?' most of the time they're fine and i'm just being papranoid! But it shows we care :) x

I don't know about the dribbled, i would keep my eye on it, if it happens again I'd take him back. As for the lack of grooming, my piggy has been very ill and it took her 3 months to get over her illness and another 6-8 Weeks after stopping the medication until she would groom herself. As first I'd have to bath her every other day as she was weeing on herself, but as time went on she got better and now is grooming and back to full health.

Hang in there and good luck. :smitten: :smitten:

Hi Jiulie, good luck with your visit to CCT, I think he needs to perhaps go back there. How long has he been on a/bs now? Is Vetrumex a probiotic too? I know its a gut stimulant but didn't know about the probiotics? Maybe he should be having some seperately.

Thanks Karen. As he is eating at the mo, I'll give him another day or so before making the appointment. If he starts losing weight again, I'll reconsider that last thought!

He finished the week's worth of Baytril two weeks tomorrow. Since then he has lost over 80g, but his appetite is slowly returning we think. I've not given him the Vetrumex for a couple of days, but he's had a full bottle of Avipro Plus yesterday and today.

Regarding the Vetrumex quote from the email was: 'ask your vet for a probiotic powder called vetrumex, this is designed for cattle but I have found it more effective than any of the others for guinea pigs.'' Apparently it's more suited for guineas being herbivores rather than others which are 'across the board' as it were, because of the similarities of the digestive systems of farm animals. The blurb on the product info on a website is : 'A natural product which can be used as an aid to convalescence following antibiotic therapy, scours, surgery, transportation or inappetance. It encourages a beneficial gut microflora by stimulating lactobacilli growth and inhibiting coliform growth. May be use for adult cattle, calves, sheep, goats, lambs, kids , sows, boars and growing pigs. ' Took me ages to source some, if you want to investigate further I'd recommend a farm or rural vet as the normal ones hadn't even heard of it. Pepe loved it, thank goodness, he also quite liked warm Oxbox Critical Care!

Sorry to hear Pepe is still not himself, fingers crossed for you that he continues to improve :)

He could've still had an upset tum from the antibiotics love :( :(
Sooo glad to hear that he was a little more like himself again :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Good idea, anymore weight loss and off to the CCT O0
Paws crossed for little Pepe and you to Julie :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

((((((hugs)))))))) julie & hoping Pepe gets back to his normal self real quick :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks all :) He troughed his veg last night, and dived into the dry food, ate more yesterday that he probably had all week, yet when we weighed him he STILL had lost weight! Puzzled now. We'll give in another day to allow any weight to gain from his scoffing yesterday before we rush off to the vets in a panic. But we discovered that you have to be on a very rigid shedule when you weigh them, in just the space of an hour he had gained 16g ::) (we don't obviously weigh him hourly, it was an experiment!)

Think we may have discovered why he has green gunk on the vetbed - Dylan (through the seperator) drinks in a completely different way from Pepe, and I caught Pepe looking like he was trying to copy Dylan's method of drinking! I'm sure that's why he was dribbling, because he was either playing with the spout or trying to copy Dylan.
Do they learn behaviour patterns like this?! I'm intrigued!

I also saw him grooming yesterday night, first time for ages :) so I'm hoping he's on the mend. He definately looked better. And he scoffed 5 ml of Critical Care this morning. All we need now is for the weight to gain ;)

Thats good news! I am so glad he is eating and grooming again.
I think they do learn behavioural patterns from each other - Tiger never flung his food bowl in protest until he saw Jeremy do it!

The weights can go up and down like a yo-yo.

If you weigh them every week on the same day,in the evening, this will give you an overall pattern.

Poor little Pepe (and of course you and Marty!) hope he is on the mend - what a worry these guys can be. Sending hugs and healing vibes from me and the gang.

We wouldn't normally weigh every day, but it was advised under the circumstances to do so as he had been eating so little. I'm hoping to get him to a checkup today to get his teeth checked, and he only lost 2g last night so his dramatic weight loss may be stablilising again. I can't understand why he is still losing weight again, he scoffed loads in the last couple of days.

Julie i weigh everyday, but that's cause of circumstances.... and that way i know if anything is happening, i can't wait the week :-\
Keep up all the good work dont forget fluids and supplement if you have to O0
Paws crossed for Pepe :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and you too love :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi Katie

He's gained another few grams, but had a slightly squitty tum last night and this morning. Despite half a Diocalm each both yesterday and this morning, both him and Dylan have developed diahorrea which I just discovered coming in from work. I've given them both a slice of banana, a buscopan and half a diocalm just now. I've been syringing Critical Care and his pro biotic faithfully to help him bulk up and now him and Dylan both have the runs! Thankfully (as I type) they both look really chirpy, responded when I called wheekies and rustled packets, they wern't sitting fluffed up and I've heard a few rumbles from Pepe at Dylan. They also are nibbling at the hay and leapt on the banana so I'm hoping its not the fatal type that killed Scampy and Blaze. (they looked just miserable and shunned their favourite foods)

We've tried so hard - I just have no idea what I'm doing wrong. :-\

Awww you are trying really hard, keep it up. Come on Pepe, get well, theres a good boy :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks Fiona. Dylan seems to have it worse than Pepe at the moment. I really hope Oscar remains fine.

Karen, Pepe is having a mix of Wagg Crunch and Cavy Cuisine and Dylan is Tesco and Cavy Cuisine. We are part way through a crossover, but I'm sure the change of food hasn't triggered it as we have been gradually filtering the CC with their other mix very slightly as recommended on the packet, we've been at it a few weeks now like this.

They are still really quite perky at the moment and happily munching hay and dry food - I even saw Pepe do a couple of weeny popcorns 30 mins ago... I just hope they are still with me in the morning.

No, I have never had any problems with changing foods in guineas (only rabbits ::) ). I was wondering whether the foods contained colourings and whether you'd looked into side effects etc, but none of these do.

No :-\ I'm just stumped. It's either yet another 'freak' occurence, I'm an incompetant owner or there is something about that corner of the house that is hurting my boys :-\
I've been constantly syringe feeding for weeks, in a permanant state of worry, up all hours to check or administer more syringe feeds or meds and the strain is beginning to show! Marty is in the States on business for the week, I really miss him and have just had a very tense conversation on our precious telephone time about them being ill. Sorry, I'm just feeling a bit tearful and knackered right now. I need another holiday!

Oh big (((((hugs)))))
try not to be down Julie, of course you are not an incompetant owner, I know you dont really believe that.
You are doing your utmost. Did anything ever come back from Vedra about Scampy and Blaze and what could have been wrong with them? are Pepes and Dylans symptoms in any way similar?
What about making a sort of diary or a list of how they were when they were well, any changes to diet, housing etc, hay, anything they may have ingested from grass say? symptoms, how it started and what happened from there? Something may jump out at you that you hadnt noticed, it may seem small but..? :-\ Who knows? If nothing else, it will give you something to focus on.

I know it is completely unrelated, but I started a list about my 4 year old son Ryan. He was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome a couple of weeks ago. I knew he was different from my other children but no one took me seriously, not my mum, the nursery, even my GP didnt think I needed a referral. The stuff I wrote down about his odd behaviour and mannerisms made no sense to me but the psycologist knew and could put a name to it. Maybe Vedra could look at your list and something could make sense to her? or of course, it could be completely unrelated but possibly worth a go? :)
