Peppa Is Having Surgery Tomorrow : (

Well she's doing ok, I'm a blubbering mess : ( feel so upset seeing my beloved piggy shaven, stitched up and with a different hoarse type squeak.

She still looks puffed up and is quieter than usual but this is to be expected less than 24 hours after major surgery.

They are on a white towel and where she was sat there is a patch of wee and plenty of poos in the run.

She's been eating some celery and cucumber and had a few pellets and a nibble of hay aswell as having a bit of hay.

Her neck is a little swollen today which I am hoping is normal but I will keep an eye on it. She tried climbing up the run last night and I was like down girl you need to rest!

Is she likely to keep getting better now or is the worst still likely to happen.

This is so so hard and think I've done the right thing as got to give her a chance xx

Have you been given pain medication or know how soon after the operation you can give some/how much? The puffing is a sign of pain. Could you ring up the clinic once they open for the day?

Are you hand feeding and watering her to keep the guts going? This is VITAL if she is not eating normally and is just nibbling! Please keep weighing her daily at the same time, as the food intake/seeing her chew can be very deceptive. I would also recommend to up her vitamin C and give her probiotics to boost her immune system to help her heal.

All you can do is give your piggies a chance; you can never control the ultimate outcome. Be strong for her - the hair will grow back very quickly. She has been operated in a very sensitive area, but that doesn't mean that she can't make a good recovery.

That all sounds fairly positive to me, but I can totally understand your distress! You've both been through quite a lot and made a massive decision over the past few days!

You can do it Peppa!

She's happily taken the vegetables and wanted more and gone to the food bowl on her own and only picked at that but guessing it's hurting her to eat harder things.

She's had 0.4 of metacam at around 8am and 0.4ml of baytril. I am to give the antibiotic twice a day and painkillers once a day.

This is so hard but we both need to be strong. Should I get some critical care or keep doing what I am doing?

I would continue to top her up with Critical Care as long as you are not sure that she is eating pellets and hay as normal. Just do it after her meals, so she is encouraged to eat as much as possible on her own. See just how much she is willing to on board. The same with water, just offer her some.

I would recommend to split the metacam in two daily doses, too, as guinea pigs have a very quick metabolism and the metacam tends to wear off in less than 24 hours a day.

To be honest, she sounds where she should be for the day after a major operation, so please take heart! :tu:

I went back to the vets this afternoon as was worried about the swelling but he was happy it was post surgical and nothing untoward. She's had 2 more injections to help keep her gut moving. She's not really wanting hay and pellets but will eat everything else I give her.

She has spells where she is alert and acts like normal then just flops which again sure is part of the recovery process. I asked about critical care and he said keep doing what I am doing and to go back tomorrow evening. This was the director of the practice and seemed to be knowledgeable. He weighed her and she has lost 5g since yesterday am.

it is good to know that she is holding her weight; the rest just needs to settle down and hopefully heal.
