Hi

I don't know if many of you will remember me but i posted a pic last week of my little piggy Peppa as he had came out in huge sores/lumps. Well i found a lovely couple who are very experienced with guinea pigs and peppa is being cared for there just now. It turns out that he has mites and a fungal infection and possibly an allergic reaction to lavender that is in his woodshavings. I have also just found out that woodshavings are bad for your piggy so all is getting turned round in this house before Peppas eagerly awaited return. I just want to say thank you very much for everybodys advice. xx
 
I am pleased you found out what is wrong with her and she is on the mend :D

I have just sent the last few days helping out at the rescue where Peppa is being nursed back to health.

He is a dear little lad and it is such a shame that a bedding that was bought and used in good faith can lead to him being so very poorly. As Peppas owner has said his skin condition has been caused by chemical burns and allergic reaction to Lavender Scented shavings. These are widely sold and recommended by pet shops but the chemicals etc involved are too harsh for piggie skin and to be honest I'm surprised we don't see more pigs with the same sort of problem. Lets use this as a wake up call and all make sure we avoid woodshavings and sawdust so that no more piggies have to be as sore as poor Peppa.
 
Would it be worth writing to the pet store or manufacturer and send pics and details of what Peppa has had to go through?

Hi Debbie, glad Wendi and co were able to help. Perhaps there are more pigs out there like this but Peppa was diagnosed as having tumours so it would go unnoticed- maybe others are just being treated for parasitic/fungal problems, I think it highlights the need for using a guinea friendly vet or going to a rescue/GOOD rodentologist that is experienced in this.
