Hello everyone, today at around half past six or quater to seven Mum noticed that Pepper was dripping some horrible stuff from his nose, his eyes werent fully open and he had lost some weight. We took him straight to the vet where she told us that he had lost nearly a quater of his weight and he might have heart failure or pneumonia and he was given an injection of baytril and another injection of something to clear the fluid on his lungs. She listened to his heartbeat and weighed him, she couldnt really hear his heart. We have now separated him from Liquorice and put him in a separate large dog cage. He has eaten some dandelion but he still doesnt look well. Please get well soon Pepper :(

aww I'm really sorry to hear pepper isn't well :(
I haven't any experience of phemonia so just bumping this up, I would assume you need to keep him warm and comfortable.
Hopefully someone else will be along soon with some good advice :) Maybe have a read of guinea lynx?
Fingers crossed for pepper x>>

I presume the vet gave him a directic to remove the fluid from his lungs and that was perhaps what the 2nd injection was?

If he isn't eating make your mum aware that she will need to syringe feed him but be very careful not to aspirate him, I have saw a pig come back from a collapsed lung due to aspiration pneumonia don't give up hope it's amazing what these little one's can get though with the correct care. The pig I know made a full recovery.

Ps - keeping weighing him daily, wishing Pepper a speedy recovery! X

Please start to hand feed Pepper to keep him from losing any more weight, if necessary round the clock. It really can make all the difference!

You can mush up pellets if you haven't got recovery food (usually in powder form) at home. A piggy that is not eating needs about 120ml over the course of 24 hours to keep its weight, usually best little but often.

hello i am mum, yes i think i have some critical care that hanwombat gave me, i am off to give him some now, he did have a diuretic, he is in a warm cage, in a warm room , on a thick fleece we are very worried about him x

hello we have just given him the critical care, he swallowed it and now he is back in the dog cage and he is now wrapped in fleece looking very snug after we gave him a cuddle. :laluot_29:

If he's not eating anything remember to keep the hand feeding up - aim for about 18 - 24ml's per feed every 4 hours if you can.

Another Update

Well Pepper is sleeping in a ball all snuggled up inside his fleece, he isnt cold which is a good sign. Mum put a heat pad around him :laluot_29: :laluot_29: :laluot_29: :laluot_29: :laluot_29: :laluot_29: :laluot_29:

our dear boy pepper died in the night, i managed to gt some syringe food into him at about 10. 3o, put a heat pad in his cage, wrapped him lightly in a fleece, and he was peaceful, but he was gone this morning, my daughter is too upset to put a post on here, we did all we could, it was all so sudden,we are both very upset, and today we buried him in the garden, alongside his first cage mate, badgerx pepper was five x

It always hard when you loose a piggy :( But you gave him a great life and thats more than what some piggies get

thankyou everyone who has replied, why is it , even though we rushed him to the vet within 10 minutes of finding him ill, keeping him warm and syringe feeding him, i still think was there more i could have done? why do i feel i let him down?

Please don't blame yourself, they can go downhill so so quick. Plus they can hide illness very well so in some case they can be ill and no one would ever know, however experienced.
I once lost a piggie to a bladder stone within a few days so I know what you mean, big hugs but you looked after him and kept him fed and warm, I'm sure he simply slipped off peacefully in his sleep x

I am so sorry. You gave him such a wonderful life please don't forget that. He will be smiling down on you. Hugs x
