Hi! I got my two piggies today from the rescue (pics incoming!) and the lovely person who had previously fostered them told me that they were having a bit of a problem with their pepper.

She was concerned they weren't eating any and seemed to have gone off it which means they weren't getting their vitamin C outside of pellets. She advised that I try cutting it in different ways and keep offering it. They seem fine with everything else and are eating like crazy. Has anyone else had this issue with their pigs? How can I encourage them to eat their pepper?

Thank you :)

They will be getting their vitamin C from pellets and all veggies. I wouldn't overly worry if they don't want to eat pepper, it might be higher in vit c but isn't the only source

Pepper is not the only source of vitamin c - every veg has some in it to varying degrees - so they will still be getting plenty of vit c from other veg, hay and their pellets. They will not suffer by not eating pepper.

If they don’t like it, then perhaps try a different colour or just don’t worry about it and give a different veg instead.
They go off thing as well so it really isn’t an issue.

Piggies can be fussy.
Yesterday’s favourite is today’s poison!

Merab would only eat red pepper and she taught her cagemates to reject pepper unless it was red.
Her successors have discovered that yellow pepper is also very nice.

Classic piggies! Thank you & everyone else for the advice, I feel much calmer :)

I had two boars Bill and Ted who never ate pepper and would run a mile if you offered it, don’t worry they are all very different just like us humans with their likes and dislikes 😆

The goblins are weird about pepper. You can't give them normal sized peppers, even sliced into chunks, because they get bored of them too quickly. However, little baby peppers? Yeah just lop the top off those and they get one each, zero complaints of boredom. They also won't eat coriander since Asda sent me about 3x more than they usually would. Apparently it's evil. Who knew?

I find my piggies much prefer thin-walled peppers to thicker-walled peppers ... ideally it should be fresh from the plant, but that's not always doable. So I go with snacking and frying type peppers instead of the big bells.
Also, rescues don't always get piggy preferences right ... sometimes it's a matter of what else there might be. I was told one of my girls liked leafy herbs and didn't like spinach. Well, the spinach part seems right, but she won't touch herbs; she just liked most of the spring mix they were offering less. I was also told she adored apples and would beg them from their lunches ... that was half true; she likes some apples, not all varieties.
I was told my other girl didn't like pepper (and shown the piece she'd rejected); she's just fussy ... she wants her pepper to be thin-walled. She gobbles up the ones we offered. Oh, and she supposedly didn't like pellets either ... yeah, just their pellets; we tried to do mixed to introduce our pellets; she ate selectively. She loves pellets.
