Peppers been neutered today and he's in pain!

The vets didn't send me home with any pain relief and he's moaning in pain and all fluffed up I feel really sorry for him anything I can do to help him my poor little boy
 
I would ring vets and ask, I would have thought you would have gotten some pain relief like metacam to bring home with you, being pain free is important.
 
I would class it as an emergency if your pet is in pain! I'm glad my practice has 24/7 cover on the premises as it covers a lot of farms in the area.
 
Did the vet mention whether he had been given a pain relief injection? These can be long lasting, but I would still have expected the vet to give you some Metacam or another pain relief medication to give over the next few days.

A fluffed up piggy is not a good sign, especially if he is clearly in pain. When piggies are in pain they will stop eating, which can cause a whole lot of other problems.

If Pepper is in visible pain then it is an emergency. If you ring your surgery then details will be left on the answerphone machine about who to contact when the surgery is closed.
 
When my Rebel was done, he had a pain relief injection, he was also given antibiotics and pain relief suspensions as well to squirt in his mouth once the injection had worn off. Not sure what the pain relief was but it smelt like bananas and as soon as Rebel smelt it, his mouth was open and he sucked for England on the syringe! He was brilliant taking his medication. ;)
 
They told me nothing just make sure he eats I have had him on my lap hand feeding him he's eat little bits of redi grass and I have given him a spoon of water he's had a wee that's was darker in colour but he's moaning and fluffed up poor boy appreciated a cuddle I'm going to try phone it's a long night too worry

I think you're right to do so. Piggies can rapidly go downhill, and the first 24-48 hours after surgery are often crucial.

I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed for your boy.

The antibiotic, Septrin, smells of bananas and is usually loved by piggies! The painkiller, Metacam, also has quite a strong smell and is usually equally loved!

Vetergesic is another painkiller. This is usually given in very small doses (my Jerry had it for a few days after his bladder operation) He hated it!
 
Thank you all for your feed back in the last half hour pepper seem to have perked up he's now eating and drinking and less moaning sounds more like him now I'm not sure if its the anaesthetic warn off or being at home has made him feel more secure I will be keeping a very close eye on him tonight a will be putting a baby monitor next to his cage just in case
 
I think it might be worth you getting the vet to give you a small bottle of metacam - it would only cost you about a tenner and he could be sore for a few days yet- it tastes like honey,so most pigs like it - as said before if they are in pain they will stop eating - so you would see a marked improvement after the painkiller has kicked in. (says she with a huge bottle in her fridge for Bumble with a kidney stone,nuggetts with spinal disease and Poppett who has just been spayed).The browny wee is quite normal for a day or so after an op.
 
Thank you I will phone tomoz morning and ask about getting pain relief I'm convinced we will be ok tonight but will phone as soon as they open x
 
I think you need some metacam or something to get him through the soreness the next few days, hopefully if he is eating he will be fine x
 
I completely agree, I had the luxury of having an experienced friend care after jack, who struggled for a week and he required pain meds and syringe feeding through the one night. I am very grateful for that but I am much more knowledgeable now. Definately get some meds and ask what he received after the op. it's an important lesson, one I learnt also, ask enough questions beforehand after any procedure as you would for any human concerned.

You may need to keep him close during the night, keep him warm enough and regular feeds.

Thank you all sooo much for you thoughts and advise much appreciated I will deffo ask about meds and there's a baby monitor linking his room to mine I have made sure he's Warm tonight and I have sectioned his large cage with a fleecy blanket over top so he feels extra secure fingers crossed for him having a good night bless him x
 
Poor boy - I'd be moaning as well if someone chopped mine off!

Seriously though, I wish you all the best through his recovery - the fact that he is eating and drinking on his own is a really good sign, and it sounds like he is getting five star treatment with his snuggly bed. Hopefully the pain keeps at bay. I would have imagined that the vet would have given a painkiller shot after surgery though, so maybe it just took a while to kick in?
 
Have you got an itemised bill, it will tell you what meds if any he's been given. When I take foster piggies from Bunny Burrows into my vets for neutering Dominika always keeps them in overnight for observation. When I pick them up the next day they're always lively & any pain has gone away. They aren't given any meds after that, just told to check daily for signs of hernia around the op area. If you call the emergency vets they should be able to give advice on the phone. If you've got any Metacam in the house you could give him some at previous piggy prescription doseage. Usually 2ml twice a day or 4ml once a day if over a Kilo or half if under. If not certain ask on the phone. If he's not eating, please syringe feed him some mashed up pellets mixed with some grated veg or if you have Recovery Plus or Critical Care in the house please feed him this with a 1ml syringe. It's important that you keep his food input up. If he's not better overnight, take him to the vets first thing in the morning. I wouldn't ring, I'd just take him in as an emergency.
 
Yes I felt bad for him but there's a reason why I am adopting from a rescue two sows to be his family as I didn't what him to be a lonely piggy.
