Hi I am new to this.I have recently lost my male guinea pig percy.I have had him since a baby as pets at home sold me 2 pregnant females.I hand raised him and miss him dearly. He was on his own till February this year when I rescued a female buddy for him. Everything was going fine till I noticed he was struggling to eat his food.I took him to my local vet and they just gave him pain relief. So I went to a recommended vet that deals with piggies. They said his back teeth 2 of them were long and they cut them back. They done this by giving him a bit of gas. When I got home with him I syringe feed him for 2 weeks straight took him to work with me made sure he was eating enough. He still could not eat on his own. I took him back to vet to make sure he was ok they said yes it can take time keep doing what your doing he will be fine. This sunday he started eating his food by himself which I was really happy he was drinking by himself too.I was watching tv and my partner said Percy was making coughing noises . I lifted him out and he started having a fit in my hand I did not know what to do.It looked like something was stuck in his throat I tried everything to save him but he passed away in my hands.I am upset as he was doing so well.I keep thinking could I have done anything to help him.He was my highlight of my day I feel really down.I now have the rescue piggie who I have called Pixie on her own.She seams ok eating and drinking and I'm giving her plenty cuddles.Should I look for another boar or just see how she goes for a few weeks .Thanks for listening Michelle:(

Hi Michelle, really sorry to hear you lost your boar, I'm sure you did everything you could :(
I would look for another piggie, as long as you feel ready, it is important for other piggies to have company so maybe start to look. You can look for another boar (that is neutered of course, unless your female was spayed?) or you could look for a lone female for her. If oyu let us know where you are we may be able to reccomend a rescue that offers 'piggy dating' where you take your piggy along to pick her own friend :)

I am so sorry for your loss. How awful for you. :( It is a good idea to get Pixie a friend. You can take her to a rescue were she can choose her own friend to prevent any fighting. Guinea pigs are social animals and need to live with another piggy so I would try to find her a friend. I am sure people on here can help you with that if you place a thread in the rescue section.

Hi I live in East Marden near chichester. Its a shame I have 2 sisters together but one of them just wants to fight Pixie . There is A rescue in Eastbourne might look there the weekend. Thanks for your kind replies. Michelle;)

So sorry to hear about Percy, I was in a similar situation with my two, Thomas and Percy, Thomas suddenly stopped eating, he wanted food but somehow couldn't eat. so we tried critical care and took him to the vets, vets said his teeth need cutting so he went under and had them done, he still didn't eat so we tried a different vet thay said that the other vets hadn't done it properly so off he went again, still didn't eat so in the end we had to get him PTS to end his and our suffering. There seems to be alot of trouble to do with teeth and guinea pigs, I'm not sure if some vets know what they are doing.
I didn't want Percy to be lonely so I ended up getting 2 more boys but they don't get on so they have to live seperate, they still have floor time all together.

So sorry to hear of your guinea pig.We try to do our best for them but sometimes its taken out of our hands.I was taken Percy to work with me in a big cat bed and feeding him all day. He was like a dog :) as soon as i got in from work he would follow me everywhere .If I was in the garden he would lie beside me bless him.
