Donald has persistent ringworm. He was treated last year in June with Imaverol and it cleared up. It started again in January and due to them being outdoors (in the garage at that point) I didn't want to use a dip. I was given a spray which helped it but didn't get rid of it, he still had flaky skin patches and it seemed to be spreading/reinfecting. Next step was itrafungol. He has just finished his 3rd week on of the oral medication. The fungal has almost completely cleared but I swear I can see a thin whitish line on the edge of his right ear. If I stop treatment now is this likely to flare/reinfect him? Or should I give him one week off and if its still there do another week of the treatment?

If it’s persistent then he may need longer than 3 weeks of intrafungol. If memory serves me correctly Mabel ended up needing about 6 weeks after a recurrence after having 3 weeks of treatment.

:agr: .I remember the vet telling me that it depends on the dosage of Intrafungol too - aka - the lower the dose - the longer it takes to clear up

Thanks both I'll see how he goes for a few days and start the next week of treatment if it hasn't gone. Very determined to get rid and he's not had any side effects from the meds

I would speak with the vet and see whether an interval course of one week off - one week on may help to mop up the rest.

In very advanced cases or with underlying health issues, it can be difficult to get on to top of ringworm.
I've been there with Ceri (irregular heatbeat - she was actually the first piggy that Simon treated with itrafungol; thankfully successfully as dips couldn't stop the ringworm patch from going walkabout on her head) and there were concerns when Barri came down with ringworm again in October that itrafungol might not be enough to clear it (thankfully for me, re has responded well, so his is most likely from a spore in the coat rather than a suppressed immune system considering the state he was in when he was surrendered to TEAS).

If you consider to additionally use a dip, make sure that Donald is completely dry again when he goes back to his hutch/cage.

I was prescribed itrafungol on an interval course. one week on one week off until he had had 3 weeks of it. He's just finished the first week. Will pop a call to the vets and pray that they can advise without a further appointment as this weeks work calendar is looking tricky

If interval courses haven't worked, try a continuous one with the consent of your vet.
