Persistent Runny Nose!

So max was on septrim for his runny nose, the vet said his breathing and chest was all fine but because he had a runny nose for a while she prescribed him septrim ( the banana one) and he's had his course of antibiotics and he still has it? He is kept in a shed with plenty of blankets and he has a friend to help keep him warm so I'm sure it can't be that, only possible thing is when I allow him to run free in the shed for floor time the door is open as I don't like using LED lights that I have in there because I feel like they need natural light! So I leave the door open, I'm wondering whether this is making him have a runny nose? because of the cold, I put laminate flooring in the shed to help keep in some warmth too and theh are protected from the draught because I put something over the bottom half of the open door to prevent the draught getting to them ... Hmm?
 
Hi if the antibiotics are not working it could possibly be Allergic Rhinitis,/ Sinusitis,/ Rhinosinusitis , possibly cause by dust? What is your hay like?
 
Oh gosh what is all that? Is it serious? I buy the pets at home excell hay that has dandelions and stuff in it aswell £6 it costs for quite a small pack!
 
Some piggies can be allergic to dust or their bedding, and it can cause exactly what you are describing - a runny nose.

It doesn't look like it is an infection of the airways as the antibiotic hasn't worked at all - in some ways that is a relief, as you do not have to worry that your piggy is in any danger of being badly ill. But it leaves you with the task to explore alternative issues that can cause the symptoms.

You can trial different beddings and hays to see whether that will influence the problem. Otherwise, I would see a specialist and pursue allergy relief.
 
There bedding is fleece though so I'm unsure whether it could be that really as I clean the poops out regularly and stuff? and I don't use detergent ect how strange! Maybe it's the hay but I've used different hay before and has remained the same, the runny nose seem to disappear whilst on antibiotics but now he's off it today I noticed he was sneezing couple times and has runny nose out of only one nostril.. :soz:
 
It sounds like a rhinitis or sinusitis, an infection of the nasal system, which can have different causes, like ofr instance an allergy.

Antibiotics can alleviate the symptoms, but not clear them permanently. Please see your vet to explore other possible avenues. It is likely to be a trial and error/detective search in finding out what is causing it. :(
 
Septric is a good antibiotic for respiratory infections. You haven't said how long the course of antibiotics was, sometimes quite a long period of treatment is needed to completely kill off the infection. It's worth going back to the vet (is it a cavy-savvy vet?) and discussing at with them. Mention a potential allergy as well.
 
He was on it for 10 days.. And yes its an exotic vet specialists vets :) I will mention to her possibly allergies thank you x
 
Hi, sorry, "Allergic" Rhinitis,/ Sinusitis,/ Rhinosinusitis , as "opposed" to bacterial , may not be as daunting as it sounds, often the only cure or is as for humans, with allergy problems, reduce dust etc. as much as possible, but you are wise to run it past your vet!!
