Is anyone on here got lots of knowledge of looking after peruvian coats?

I brush them every other day and every time is an ordeal, I am very gentle but they still squerm and squeel and it's hard to do a good job. I trim any knots out and brush through but their coat seems to get knotty in a day:(

I think they need regular bathing ....? would this make grooming easier? They are outsidein a hutch could I bring them in bath and dry them then put them back out?

thanks:))

What sort of bedding do you use? I have 2 as permanent residents and as my favourite breed I've had a few that I've kept over the years.

I find that if you keep them on shavings or similar that they get tangled up easier. One of my girls, China is nicknamed Rapunzel because she hates being brushed and hates a haircut even more. Mine are bathed in GG every month - 6 weeks and it keeps their coat nice and helps with grooming. I also use if really knotty mane and tail spray for horses, it's amazing and anyone who has horses will know what a must have it is. Only put a little in my hand rather than spraying onto them and it helps get knots out.

I brush them every 3 days or so and don't have knots to cut out, infact I find that the merinos, texels and the like are more inclined to get knots. Hope that helps.

My new boy is a long haired piggie, and I find keeping him on vetbed and hay in a rack stops him getting tangled and knotty. :)

Lord Bernie and I have had to learn how to keep his coat.

To be honest he came short haired and it grew and grew!

He is very susceptible to skin problems and because of that he hates being combed through. His skin is very fragile.

A peruvian in a full coat would be washed and the hair put in curlers to keep it beautiful.

So, how we (me and the Lord Bernine) deal with it {:|

Lord Bernie has a bath at least once a month. And contrary to many, I use "Sproral-D" This keeps his coat in a very silky and combable condition and his skin ideal (it also makes my hands beautifully soft afterwards!). His coat hides a multitude of sins :{ - he can burst out suddenly if I use anything other than Megazorb for bedding, a different sort of hay and if I change his diet by accident! Plus - and importantly, the long hair must be trimmed to get the air to his skin - Lord Bernie is not a show piggie (he may think so :)) ) so I get the scissors out because the worse thing is for them to sit on the long hair and widdle on it, which then tracks up to the skin. Get the botty hair trimmed!

Bernie, bless him, is so good in the bath, but he still squeaks during the combing, but never does when bathed and dried - by the hairdryer and comb. He obviously feels so much better after it and his hair is beautifully silky and un-knotty.

There may be people on here won't agree Sporal-D but it suits him perfectly and he's in great condition, skin and coat :)

I use the GG on the other piggies, but Bernie didn't do well on it. Just my opinion.

My gaga is coronet/peruvian. she looooves being brushed. and sits completly still for it. Not so keen on having a bath. but being blowdried she loved the last time.

I have three coronets, but grew up with a succession of perus. My very first own boy way back when I was a teenager, a very vocal boar, used my belly as a trmapolin in order not get groomed!

I tend to keep the back ends cut very short, as they tend to get messed up most. Many piggies do not like being groomed (can't blame them - tangles pulling on one's skin are not nice!)

However, I have mine indoors on fleece, and it makes a big difference, as less things are getting tangled up.

Thanks:))

they are on fleece, so not too bad for their coats, think I will bath them all tom with gg posh and go as I think it is needed then gently comb through and trim the hair shorter at the back:)

I cut the coat while the water is still n the sink. I just cut off the longer bits that flow in the water, so when they are dry it is a nice short and even coat, and then brush through when dry.

That's a good tip thanks, I'm just about to bath them so will do that:))

With my old Sheltie, I had to brush him every month or 6 weeks, cos he was a boy I guess, he got greasy and would get tangled if he was dirty. But if he was clean then he only needed brushing once a week (though I'd do it more often usually) and I just get his hair trimmed just so it didn't trail off the ground, and I trimmed it short on the belly and bum cos you couldn't see there anyway.

Is it just his bum that's getting knots? I would recommend trimming off his hair to the length of his feet (just touching the ground) as it's easier to maintain and also trim around his vent (genital area) to prevent knotting from urine.

Boars get greasy from the grease gland on their back which can be cleaned with some dishwashing liquid and a toothbrush- just apply then rinse. Also I wouldn't bath him too frequently as you are taking all the natural oils from his coat which may cause him to get dandruff and dry skin. You could also try using some conditioner in his knots and rubbing them out without bathing the entire coat.

Just a few tips, hope it may help you out.

It is mainly round the back area that is getting a bit tangled, I have given them a bath and trimmed around that area thanks it makes such a difference-c

I find that when I keep the hair not only around his bum, but the hair on their bum and back legs verry short, I hardly ever have to brush them. I just let the longer hair on their backs, grow longer to "cover" the short bits. They still look beutiful with their long hair, and you will hardly notice the short hair at the back.
Having done this, I only brush them every 3 to 4 days, and bath them maybe every 6 to 8 weeks, and they do not have a knot in sight.
