None of my piggies are currently insured but as my piggies have had a run of ill health my vets bills have been steadily mounting to the point where I'm beginning to think I should I sure some if not all of them. I know many members do I sure their piggies so thought I'd ask for some info from you all to help me make my decision.

Who do you I sure your piggies with and roughly what do you pay by way of annual or monthly premium? And have any of you had any issue with claims being challenged?

Thanks for your help.

I haven't insured my pigs but i looked into it recently. Exotic direct insurance let you insure 3 pigs under one cost which for me quoted at £30-£40 depending on which option I chose. The pigs could not be insured if they were over 5 years though. And I think it only applied if the costs were over £60 so wouldn't apply unless something major happened really.. upto you though. I never got round to it and now all but one of my pigs are over 5.

l havnt got insuranse , but l seem to remember being told by some one that its not so much the price
of the insuance , its the excusion clauses in the small print that you realy need to whach out for

Mine aren't insured, I did have 10 guinea's and it would cost me too much, plus my vet fee's very rarely go above £60 (trying not to jinx myself here!).

I got a similar quote and the excess was £75 so I decided that unless it was something major it wouldn't qualify and at £30 a month the premiums soon add up.

It's a gamble either way, you have to jump one way or the other.

I have insurance with Exotics Direct and it's the best thing I have! In last couple of years I've spend in excess of 3,000 pounds in vet fees and have received almost all back. Like all insurances you have to pay an excess when you put a claim and I think it's £60 but if you put subsequent claims for same issue you do not pay for excess again. Only for new claims.

The thing to bear in mind, especially in your case is that they might not cover existing conditions and yes, they won't cover over 5yr olds (unless they have been insured from before, of course). Dentals are also usually not covered.

I try to save some and have a credit card for emergencies but it's very nice to then receive a cheque and get some of the money back.

Like all insurance it's a gamble but for the health of my pigs one I'm happy to make and so far don't regret it.

Before I lost some of my pigs I had 9 insured and paid around £80 a month.

I wouldn't be without insurance. I spent over £1,000 on my last Guinea pig with bladder stone issues, and Billy has cost me about £400 odd already this year with a jaw infection. Xrays are expensive, they are small animals & when they are poorly it can really cost a bomb.

Yes I paid a £60 excess, but it saved me a lot of money in my opinion.
