I would really like some advice on this please. My newly adopted pig has quite severe mites. It's been untreated for, I would say, at least a month. He has quite a lot of hairloss from his middle to his rump. He has white hair and I can honestly say that you can see parts of his skin through his hair from just below his shoulders downover. I found small areas of scabbing where he's scratched himself on his shoulders and a few around his middle. I looked in on him this morning and he's been chewing on his back and has quite a large area of very sore looking red skin. He' had his first dose of ivermectin yesterday, I'm awaiting my gorgeous guinea products to give him a bath to help soothe his skin. I ws wondering if there was anything else I could do for him. I was thinking about wrapping his back so he can't chew it and make it worse. Anyone any ideas for this? I had a look on guinea lynx website and they recommend something called vet wrap, which is like a self adhesive bandage but I have no idea where I could get something similar over here.

He's eating fine at the minute and he's a good weight, he's heavier than one of my boys whos twice his age! :o He drinks more than my pigs do and I'm slowly introducing him to veggies because he's never had any and apparently been in the shop for 2 months. Not entirely sure he knows what to do with hay either because he hasn't eaten much of it and I didn't see any in his cage at the shop.

Any advice or suggestions would be most welcome. Really want to help this guy.

Re: Pet shop pig, quite severe mites

You should be able to get vet wrap from places that sell horse supplies/ saddlers as it is also used on horses legs .

Re: Pet shop pig, quite severe mites

How about just using a sock in the meantime to cover his whole body? I know of some people using them for skinny pigs

Re: Pet shop pig, quite severe mites

Vetrap is available from saddlers/feed merchants in all sorts of lovely bright colours! Your vet should have some too or try ebay or any of the equestrian suppliers online (Robinsons). One web site I looked at suggested using a tubigrip bandage round the piggie's body.

Re: Pet shop pig, quite severe mites

Please do not use vetwrap on your piggy, it will make the piggy's skin sweat. Use ordinary gauze bandage available from any Pharmacy/Supermarket. Wrap bandage twice round body, go over one shoulder and under the opposite arm, and repeat with the other shoulder. Secure the bandage by following over the shoulders and around the waist with micropore, also readily available.

Meantime bath your piggy with an anti parasitic shampoo, Flea or Die, Chrissie's lice and easy or lyclear followed by Nizarol or another anti fungal shampoo just incase fungal has managed to take a grip. The two often go hand in hand.

Re: Pet shop pig, quite severe mites

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Quick query, Jasper has developed a sore in the middle of his back where he's scratched and bitten himself. I didn't want to bathe him in anything until this had cleared up or at least scabbed over properly and the mites have cleared a bit. I was thinking that the shampoo would sting quite a bit and he's already jumpy enough being touched as it is. What do you think?

Re: Pet shop pig, quite severe mites

Poor lad - I always feel so sorry for them when they have sore skin.

Even if he does have broken skin he will still need a gentle bath - it will actually be soothing rather than sore I would think and the sooner you can start treating him the better.

As others have said please don't use Vetwrap as it will make him worse not better. Previously I have used gauze bandages to cover wounds or if they are induced by scratching you could try and tape up his back feet so he can't use his claws on himself but this is really fiddly!

Do let us know how he gets on.

Re: Pet shop pig, quite severe mites

I used a cotton tubi grip cut some off to cover sore place and cut little leg holes mine wore it like a teeshirt I put aloe vera gel on the sore place first and this prevented it sticking, it worked well for my piggie. I made several to wash and wear good luck

You can just about see how bald his rump is. The photos don't really show it very well because he has a layer of hair on his back that covers it. He's semi longhaired.

The sore on his back that he keeps reopening.

but what a beautiful face he has. He's such a cutie

One web site I looked at suggested using a tubigrip bandage round the piggie's body.

I used this years ago and cut it out to look like a jumper so hes legs go through the bottom two holes if you know what I mean I had a pig I took in with a sore on his shoulder/back area it worked wonders, I also dripped ivomec on the sore place instead of the back of his neck it worked brillaintly that was my way of doing it not sure if others have done this , but for me it worked and I would do so again if anything like that happend again to me ,

My nans piggie Ruby had sores exactly the same as that, we gave her all her medicine from the vet but also applied some teatree cream i found in PAH it cleared up well and you dont need much.

sorry i cant offer any advice but i really do hope hes feeling better soon, hes such a cutie xx

yup I reckon tubigrip too or pop to the vets and ask for one of those mini collar things, hes a cute lil guy

It looks really sore, the shop has got alot to answer for. :tickedoff: I would suggest getting some antibiotic cream, either from a shop or the vets. :)

Well Jasper must be feeling a lot better today, he's been extremely noisy. Wheeking at my boys through the wall because he's in the next room. It's been a very loud evening. He had his first run out for floor time which he seemed to enjoy which brings me to another query. He favours one of his back feet. Sometimes he will use it and sometimes he won't. When he sits he rests on what would be his heel if he was human. I've checked the foot over and I can't see anything wrong with it, no hot parts or red bits, no swelling or anything of that kind. He has got long nails because I havn't trimmed them yet and I'm guessing the pet shop won't have done it so he's 4 months and never had a nail trim. Do you think this could be the problem? His nails are just curling and hurting his foot? I had planned to trim his nails over the weekend when he gets his next dose of ivermectinso hopefully that will solve it. Anyone got any ther suggestions apart from his nails?
