I know a lot of posters here are very anti pet shops and I totally understand why. But it got me thinking... don't those baby piggies need 'rescuing' in their own way too?

Everyone who knows me understands I'm hoping to go down the rescue centre route of I get more piggies after the loss of my boyz. But Freddie and Marmalade originally came from Pets At Home. Am I sorry they were ever born? Never.

I just think those little babies never chose to be born into a pet shop breeding programme - don't they deserve a loving forever home too? x

I can see your point but I also feel buying from pet shops only encourage the breeders to breed again and sell to the pet shops. If everybody went to rescues then there would be no demand for pet shops. I worry about the poor sows being bred back to back too. The people who buy from pet shops ensure the sows are used for breeding again. I do feel sorry for the poor animals in pet shops though but I feel if I bought one I would be encouraging breeding.

It is tough, and if you can it is best to rescue, but that isnt possible for everyone. There is also the thought that if some how everyone boycotted petshop animals and no-one was a backyard breeder and everyone rescued instead, where would the next generation come from? Afterall, majority of recue piggies come from those 2 situations. So it would end with no piggies. There needs ro be focus on the animal standards and have stricter ones not just for pet shops but anyone breeding, with harsher consiquences. I am sick of news stories of people doing dispicable things to animals and just getting a ban from owning animals for a year, that isnt a proper punishment!

I go to my local Pets At Home regularly, always have done, just to chat with the piggies.

There's always a really brave one that comes out and noses the perspex, eyeballing me.

Piggies like my voice for some reason. I always tell them they are beautiful.
