pet shops?

i was wandering around some pet shops yesterday looking for a new viv for the oh's spiders and one of the first ones i went was pets at home and i've got to say i'm impressed all the buns and rabbits were kept seperately and males and females in seperate pens and they al had fresh water vegetables hay and even a fan and frozen water bottles! its so different from how i remember it!

on the other hand i went into another pet shop and it was disgusting the bunnies were all being kept in a tiny little pen like a cupboard with perspex doors which were so filthy you could hardly see through them there were 6 bunnies in a cage the size of 2 cat carriers no hay no fans no water bottles there was a sign on the doors saying that the cages have been checked for size by the rspca and passed and i thought yeah right big enough for 1 or 2 bunnies maybe but not possibly 6? and there were kittens in the same sort of pen looking so sorry for them selves 1 of which has thankfully been sold i came out of they close to tears surely they shouldn't be able to get away with this sort of stuff?
 
I have to say that even though pets @ home can look good on the shop floor it's normally a different story through the back. I know people who work in there.

I honestly think pet shops shouldnt be aloud to sell animals but then where would most of us get our pets from?
 
thats true i worked in a pet shop when i was 17 and it was horrendous to the point i ended up quitting and shopping them to the rspca they then got shut down and fined! i think they should make the guideline clearer and actually check up on them!
 
They really should but the lack of funding and resorces often means this doesn't happen xx

What about the RSPCA, other shelters, breeders and just general advertisements in the local and not so local newspapers! Don't forget those dreaded Auctions as well.....

I don't think pet shops should be selling any live animals at all. They should be purely there for buying feed, grooming equipment and other nick nacks that you need to house a pet comfortably.
 
I am well aware we dont all get our pets from shops. My boys were impulse shop bought and the rest i "rescued". However, not everyone knows about rescues. x
 
Agree Sarah I didn't know about rescues at all for Guinea Pigs when I got Sunshine, he was an impulse buy although we were looking for a pig but just not at that time. I couldn't leave him in with an albino bunny, I know I gave to the store but I wouldn't be without him. Two weeks later Twinkle arrived from Pets at Home and two weeks after that Cuzzy came from the same store.

I then joined the forum and realised their where hundreds upon hundreds of pigs that needed homes and I adopted Flora and Fleur from Graham. Cuzzy broke up from the group of three boars I had and after being alone for a while I got Eccles from a vets as his pregnant mum was abandoned there. Cuzzy sadly died a week later (he was an ill pig) and I was desperate for a friend for Eccles so I asked at Pets at Home for one in their rehoming section and now we have Pudsey who is allergic to woodhavings.

Fleur, the was mounting Flora all the time so I thought getting her two babes may calm her down and it has worked I adopted Amber and Pearl from Helen.

Then we had fisticuffs Sunshine and Twinkle fell out and had to live seperatly and I picked up Radley from a free ads, he's already been bred from! :tickedoff:

Twinkle lives next to Sunshine and Radley but he is getting his friend soon from a small rescue in Notts called Milo.

And then there is Tika Rabbit from a rescue up North and hopefully her little friend Harvey from the RSPCA on the Wirral!

I only wanted four pigs! 98) But with fall outs and female hormones it's kinda spiralled! ;D

Pet shops won't stop selling until the government bring in new legislation. It will never happen. Neither will home checks from pet shops. All we can do is not spend money in them that sell animals. I am lucky I have two local small shops that don't sell animals at all!

So I've learnt the hard way about rescues but I wouldn't use a pet shop again to buy. :)
 
If you have concerns with a petshop & welfare of the livestock contact your local council as they are the ones who licence these places (ask for licensing dept) & ask for the outcome/see copy of the report with dates/times of the visit-they are the ones that can stop the sale of livestock.

Council's don't care only in really extreme cases. Animals are low down on their priorities sadly. :(
 
Yes, I have learned the hard way over the years that most big chain pet stores are just out to make money. They generally don't have anyone qualified to care for their small animal departments. I have purchased several in my younger years, ALL DIED! I now only purchase from breeders or private pet stores that I know are trustworthy. If I am going to buy a pet that is going to be sick, I will get one from a shelter. Not that the ones in the store don't need to be saved, it is just that their small animals are usually the most expensive out of all stores. My first guinea pig purchase was years ago from Petsmart. I didn't realize all their pigs were sick. I bought one that turned out to have a respiratory infection. After doctoring, he died. Went back and checked the other, all were sick. Not surprising b/c years prior to this I bought a hamster at Petco, died within 2 days. They did take it back for supposed autopsy? They replaced my hamster 2 more times till I requested my money back b/c all died. I went to a private pet store and my hamster lived for years. My current pigs from the same pet store have been very healthy since I got them and going strong. Most big chain pet stores don't even handle their small animals. I requested to hold a guinea pig once and the girl told me she was scared of them and refused to hand me one! Hello, you work here. Probably not a good thing to tell a customer. My friend also worked at Petsmart once. She didn't stay very long. She said there were tons of sick animals in the back waiting to die, NOT being treated or trying to be saved. The vet that supposedly checks and approves all the pets was bogus and had NO license, etc.
