Pet Store Vs 4 Hour Drive To Los Angeles.

I have been on the look out for piggies at a rescue here in Las Vegas. But I'm having no luck. Today my kids seen 2 they really like at the pets store. My only other option is at a Los Angeles rescue but i was wondering would the long 4 hour drive be to hard on the piggies? And the 2 week wait to long for the kids lol. Thanks in advance
 
I can't comment on the drive, i don't know enough, but my kids had to wait for the checks etc for the rescue and to be honest I used that as part of their commitment. If they couldn't wait a couple of weeks then they weren't ready for a pet. I bought them a book to read up on guinea pig care in the meantime, also to prove their commitment!

I'll confess though, I don't know what I would have done in your scenario regarding getting a pet, I was lucky our rescue is under an hour away.

If you can make it a day out, please do! You will get so much better service and peace of mind - and have a much smoother start into guinea pig ownership, especially as the rescue will likely make sure that you adopt guinea pigs that are suitable for a household with children and are used to being handled - not something you get with skittish, wiggly pet shop youngsters that will take longer than 2 weeks to settle in! I have travelled that distance with guinea pigs, so it is safe to do so.
You could try to involve your children into preparing for the guinea pigs and learning about them in the meantime. We have got lots of information at the top of our various care sections.

Los Angeles GPR is a high standard rescue where you will be in safe and experienced hands and that you can fall back on if there are problems during the whole life of any adopted guinea pigs.
Have you tried this rescue here, which is in Las Vegas and comes recommended? I have been following Los Angeles rescue on facebook for a few years now and have been featuring them on my own Wiebke's Tribe fb page, so I know about them, but the Nevada shelter is newly listed on the Guinea Lynx list (which we cooperate with). It means that they have passed some rather stringent criteria to have made the cut.

My son did help me build the cage and i made him do research on the net about piggies. We also started a video diary and a Observation note book that i have him write down what we have done for the day on the cage and going have him continue when we get the piggies. My daughter is just turning 4 so she just jumps in and out of our lil videos lol.
 
Wow the kids are disapointed they piggies were rescued last night! Thanks for the help.
 
Oh no! How disappointing. Do they have pigs in regularly or is it infrequent? Could you get your name on a list for them to call you if any come in?

Do they have more guinea pigs in the pipeline or are they a general shelter with only occasional guinea pigs?
 
I have twice had piggies from a Rescue which is 3½ hours drive from me. I made sure the carrier had a soft cozy in for them, also plenty of hay, plus lots of cucumber for hydration. The first pair of piggies settled in within 10 minutes of the long drive. The next pair of piggies (whom I've had for 4 weeks now) took a little longer, but are fine now. If you can make sure the children are quiet in the car and don't keep peeking in the carrier "to see what they're doing now, Mum" I'm sure they'll be fine. You may want to just throw a towel partly over the carrier so it's a bit darker for them.
 
I fought the good fight to rescue a pair of piggies but after raising the kids expectations headed to the rescue they wore my wife down and the vote quickly became 3 to 1 in favor of going to pet store to get the pair they wanted.

So we have a pair of 3 month old girl piggies purchased from petco. The kids named them fluffy and skittles. Thanks for all of the advice.

:yahoo: Yey! New piggies! Congrats on getting your two new girls! They are very pretty. Nice big cage too. That ramp looks a bit shaky though. If you have any spare grids, you might be able to bend a couple into shape to make a ramp with sides. so the girls can't fall off when running up and down. If you look at the "Home made cages" thread, you will see what I mean.
 
Thanks i was thinking the ramp was a lil but one of the piggies went up and down wit no problem the other has yet to explore the bottom floor. I'm going to look into redoing my ramp. Again thanks couldnt have got this far with out the great help of this forum! Thanks again.
