Hello,

I am looking into getting a pair of guinea pigs and it seems that most of the local pet shops get their pigs from a supplier called "Pet Supply Inc." Does anyone here know anything about their practices? Are they ethical? Thank you.
 
I would highly doubt that any company that can produce the required amount of stock for numerous pet store chains would be ethical. It really depends on what you class as ethical but I would assume that they would be in too confined a space for a happy life, bred back to back and allowed to get pregnant at a very young age and I wouldn't say this is ethical.

However, there are times when it is not possible to take it a pet piggy from an ethical source and even rescue piggies have to come from somewhere eg missexed pet store piggies. The bonus over a pet store as opposed to breeders is that there is some protection and demand for support that can be made if they purchased piggies are ill or pregnant

Could you pop your location in please so that if we need to give tailored advise it makes it easier. Go to your user name at the top and scroll down to location and pop it in there. Just state and country is fine. It's great that you're doing your research before getting your guinea pigs.

I agree with @Lady Kelly about breeding of piggies and it not being entirely ethical.

I updated my location. Also, I talked to someone at a local store about them and they said that Pet Supply Inc. 'finds' guinea pigs through many different avenues. I'm not quite sure what that means.
 
I would be suspicious of that. Is there any where else you can get guinea pigs from?
 
Here is a rescue from Colorado that you can inquire from (not sure how far you are from them, I just Googled based on your location). You can probably Google for more rescues.

Welcome to the forum.
Looking forward to seeing pics of your piggies when you get them.
As others have said we cannot always get piggies from good ethical sources so if no other option is available to you think of it as a rescue operation when at least 2 piggies are going to have a good home and a good life.
