Since Oreo has passed away Brownie needs a new roommate. He doesn't seem to be affected by the loss but he should still have a buddy. My question is, should I get one from Petco, where they won't know how old he is or if he has any illnesses, or should I find a shelter and find out how old he is, if he's sick and anything else I should know? When I got Oreo and Brownie they were living in a fish tank with piles of poop everywhere and an empty hay rack because the teenage employees were more concerned with talking in the back.

We would always recommend a shelter/rescue over purchasing. There is nothing wrong with purchasing, it may become essential if you cant a shelter, but a shelter is the preferable option.
It’s not just to ensure they are properly sexed and healthy, it’s also to ensure support for a successful bonding.
If you buy a pet shop piggy, you won’t be able to do anything about it if the two piggies don’t bond and will be left in a situation where you have to keep them in separate but side by side cages (which, of course, you may be fine with).
A shelter should be able to help you if the bonding fails - whether you are fine to keep them separate but side by side or whether you’d prefer to return the rescue piggy and try another piggy to find a successful bond.

To me, it doesn't matter - either way, a piggie needs a good home.
While shelters are ideal of course, they aren't always an option for everyone. There's none in my area, so I've always gotten mine from a pet store - they need homes too.

My most recent boar was from Petsmart; he was alone for 3 weeks there they had told me, all by himself. :(
I just had to get him, as I too had a lone boar that lost his older roommate.
I felt so bad he was alone; now him and my other boar are best of friends, like brothers.

I hope you find the right fit for Brownie. <3 :)
